I'm thinking about upgrading to a Briley choke for trap. I use a Beretta 391 field with a comb pad to make it more trap-friendly. Does anyone know if it is worth the change? And what is the difference in their regular, extended, and sepectrum chokes?

The Briley chokes are darn good, but so are the Beretta chokes I have checked out. The Briley is not worth the money IMO, Hastings makes chokes of equal quality for about 1/2 - 2/3 the price. I am not familiar with the spectrum chokes. The regular aftermarket chokes are better than OEM in a lot of cases, but I don't think you will gain much if any over Beretta chokes unless you want a constriction they don't offer. Longer chokes (extended) either taper down slowly to allow the shot more time to settle into position and not be deformed as badly, or they taper more like a standard choke and have a longer parallel section before the shot exits the tube. Both theories have some merit, and it will depend on what you buy as to what you get. I have 6 or 8 Briley extended and 10 or so Hastings extended, they do in most circumstances throw better patterns than standard choke tubes. More even distribution and higher pellet counts are the goal, and they do help some. The biggest plus for aftermarket chokes is the ability to get any constriction you want and get chokes tailored to larger shot sizes.

FWIW, that is my take on it, the ramblings of a bonehead with 40+ choke tubes.....

What's the pattern like now at the distance you need coverage? That's the cruz of the matter.

Brileys have a great rep. But Berettas aren't junk either.
