England afraid to fly its own flag

Following threats by extremist Islamic group, several corporations, chain of pubs ban England flag
Modi Kreitman

Following warnings by extremist Islamic group al-Muhajiroun, in which the group said that the red cross in the England flag symbolizes the 'blood thirsty crusaders' and the occupation of Muslims, some of the largest companies in England have ordered their workers not to wave the flags.

The flag has recently appeared in England on everything from bikinis to cars, and sold in endless versions in stores.

But the Islamic protest forced some corporations, such as cable companies NTL, Heathrow airport in London, and even the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Agency to ban the flag in every form due to fears from reactions of Muslims.

The Sun tabloid newspaper has in recent days launched a campaign to bring back the flag, and has published a blacklist of companies preventing their workers from expressing their patriotism at work.

The Sun said that a large pub network has banned drinkers from entering with symbols of the national team.

The hero of the day is a two year-old toddler, who was thrown out with his parents from Leicester, because he wore the England team's uniform

Part of the sporadic waves of ridiculous political correctness in this country. :cuss:

Flag ban plans have caused some delightful acts of defiance, as shown by the Sun.

Result! Cab flags allowed

• You can't flag down a cab

By SUN ONLINE REPORTER

KILLJOY councillors have backed down and agreed cabbies can fly the England flag during the World Cup.

Cabbies in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, had been told they were not allowed to fly the St George Cross from their vehicles because of “public safety issues”.

But now Cheltenham Borough Council have done a u-turn after a public outcry in the town.

They have said cabbies can display national flags until the end of
the World Cup tournament.

A council spokeswoman said the flags are allowed as long as they are “plain national flags which do not include any product or company branding, and that they are attached in a safe position so as not to compromise the safety of passengers".

Thousands of motorists across England have attached flags to their cars to show their support for Sven-Goran Eriksson’s team in the tournament which kicks off in Germany next week.

Well so far it appears that these 'flag bans' are the result of private business decisions, and to link children being banned from wearing football colours in pubs to the threat ignores the fact that some pubs have long standing rules about football colours.

I'd imagine that the local council was more concerned about some notion of standards than about 'ridiculous political correctness', after all those flags that appear on the outside of cars around every world cup start to look rather tatty after about three days. Good to see it was overturned though.

So really - where is the THR material?

Granting islamofascists the violence veto will be the death of us.

I am much concerned about this kind of thing. Increasingly, we seem to want to try and accommodate the least reasonable person or group of people. I don't think people consider the likely results of continually caving in to whomever throws the biggest tantrum - more trantrums.

A similar dynamic exists with trying to accommodate the least responsible, the least intelligent, or the most easily offended.

It is true that 'The Sun' is a rubbish red-top newspaper, full of crap. However, the article in question is true, many companies and local town councils have tried this in the past few years.

Yep that's right, I said Town Councils. Some people (Year or two ago now) have been told that they can't fly the Union Jack or the England Flag on their own property. Of course, after media coverage and the ensuing outrage, this rule was dropped.

Why not call it what it is, cowardice in the face of bullies? Those who won't resist, even at the risk of dying, become serfs.

This is not a British problem, it is a universal problem of human societies and human nature.

No problem dev_null.

Absolutely mate, we must resist these assaults upon on our national heritage. One day it's flags they want gone, the next it's your national anthem. Soon after, it's your very existence.

I think this quote from Yes, Prime Minister! is appropriate to the conversation on the Sun:
Sir Humphrey: The only way to understand the Press is to remember that they pander to their readers' prejudices.

Jim Hacker: Don't tell me about the Press. I know *exactly* who reads the papers. The Daily Mirror is read by the people who think they run the country. The Guardian is read by people who think they *ought* to run the country. The Times is read by the people who actually *do* run the country. The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country. The Financial Times is read by people who *own* the country. The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by *another* country. The Daily Telegraph is read by the people who think it is.

Sir Humphrey: Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun?

Bernard Woolley: Sun readers don't care *who* runs the country - as long as she's got big tits.

G36-UK, pure comedy gold mate. :D

Speaking of the H&K G36, why don't our troops get around to ordering some? Lovely weapons.

Well the least the government could,do would be to give back the weapons that they banned from us-the citizens-so that we can drive out those scumbags, from our country-and create some normality, into our somewhat upside-down,politically-correctful country.

I suppose that it won't be long before beach-towels-that have the St George's flag, printed on them-will be banned, because it offends "muslims on the beach" and so will lincolnshire and Cumberland sausages, because they are made of pork.

Next it will be Australians, who would suffer-Oh please Mr Howard,it's offensive.

Hey, our soccer team won't fly the US flag overseas. You'd be amazed how many US corporations have the same policy on an informal level.

Well, we have given up Christmas to prevent offending people, is the flag next??:fire:

So, folks, what will we do when Nancy Pelosi stands up in front of the house and proposes legislation to protect Muslim "feelings" which contains an American flag ban?

National pride,(The costly development of the SA80.)but the MOD police and the London Metropolitan police-use H&K G36 assault-rifles,though.

The Glasgow ARU use them too. Allegedly, they use the SF trigger group for their rifles.
