So the British are worried about "normalizing" the sight of a handgun?
I would be willing to bet that the same people don't complain about seeing bad guys with guns during actual programming. Sheesh.

Gun protesters get Land Rover ad banned
(Filed: 31/08/2004)

A television advert for Land Rover featuring a woman firing a gun has been banned by watchdogs for glamourising gun culture.

Accompanied by dramatic background music, the advert for the Freelander Sport begins with a woman taking a gun from a drawer and brandishing it as she hurries after a man leaving her house.

As he climbs into the vehicle, she takes aim before shooting into the air vertically upwards. It then becomes clear that the gun is a starting pistol as the man smiles and drives away.

The agency behind the advert said it was intended to promote the message "that the Freelander Sport triggered sporting behaviour".

But 348 viewers complained to media regulator Ofcom, meaning that the advert is in the top 10 of the most complained about commercials.

Most viewers were concerned that the commercial glamourised or normalised gun culture despite the fact handguns are illegal in Britain. Many also pointed out that the gun was stored irresponsibly.

Ofcom ruled that the advert had breached guidelines on harm and offence and must not be shown again.

"Given regular coverage of high-profile shooting incidents and public concern about the wider social impact of the so-called gun culture, the glamourisation and normalisation of guns, even indirectly, is simply offensive to many people," Ofcom said.

"In this advertisement, the starter pistol was used in both an apparent casual manner and just for fun, to signal the start of the man's journey. The domestic setting, together with the gun simply lying in a drawer, normalised the ownership of guns."

:what: :cuss: :barf: :banghead:

How come these people weren't complaining about Terminator 2 being on TV a couple of days ago?

Or Die Hard about a week before that?

There are loads of movies etc on UK TV that "glamourise guns" (and frequently, glamourise shooting people with guns).

I can't believe that even over here there were enough lilly-livered idiots to get that (very stylish) ad pulled.

Baaaaaaaaaaaaa

Churchill must be rolling over in his grave, along with a lot of kings, princes, earls, dukes, lords, knights, baronets, and regular old mean Englishmen who could defend themselves (even Nelson's probably rolling in his grave and he was a sailor, not a grunt).

Does the House of Marlborough have to give up their privately owned firearms? If so, who owns Churchchill's Broomhandle?

Sad.

Iapetus, do I read this correctly
Ofcom ruled that the advert had breached guidelines on harm and offence and must not be shown again...

That this is a regulatory agency pulling the advertisement and not the private sector?

I just don't understand it. The idea is to paint gun ownership as bizarre and scary behaviour? Shouldn't they be more concerned about "normalizing" Rover ownership?

Looks like it.

I'm afraid I don't know what powers Ofcom actually has, though.

Well, every country has the government it deserves.

Valid all over the world in the past, the present, and the future.

Don't whine when the next president's name is KERRY. There must have been people voting for him, albeit, after it, you can interview 1000 citizens, and, astonishing, NOBODY voted for him.

Seen that, been there.

Well Iapetus, I'm sorry for you.

Can't say I'm 100% happy with our FCC, but that's far and away worse than anything I've heard of. I'm sure we've got more than a few weenies that would like to pull that here if they could, though.
