Hi,

I was wondering if a crack on the wrist of a English stock will be prone to cracking again, or if it has been properly repaired it should be OK? What causes wrist cracks? Loose screws, excessive recoil, swelling?

I want to buy a Brno SXS but the only caveat is that it has a repaired wrist crack, chokes are IC, M.

Brno SxS 12GA. Very good bores. 28 1/4 inch barrel. Mod & I.C. Double trigger, ejectors. Stock has a repaired crack around wrist. . Shows some handling marks. Overall very good condition

Depends on who did the repair and what was used for the repair. Most wood glues are strong enough that a new break would be through a differnet section of wood. Even the most common yellow glue is strong enough.

I had a Browning O/U fall out of the safe and the wrist landed right on the corner of a steel exercise machine. The repair was done by a qualified stock guy who used some uber-epoxy and pins to make that section stronger than the rest of the area. (Think of it like a weld - if done right, it is stronger than the surrounding metal)

Many things can cause cracks - loose screws allowing the wood to flex too much and take a pounding, fancy grain with a weak spot that was undetected before, banging against something hard (like mine), etc.

Sidelocks have a greater potential because of the thin wood at the head and the amount removed internally for the action - most will start to crack where the stock meets the fences
