Had a hammer block safety break on my 649 a few years back. Don't remember the number after the dash but it was new enough to have the firing pin mounted on the frame but had no lock. Sent it back to S&W and had it back in less than two weeks.
You sent the gun back to replace the safety piece? I must be missing something... I can R+R that part in 30 seconds and that includes the coffee break.:scrutiny:

Ahhhhhhh I love when people say how much more reliable revolvers are over autos.
I've yet to have one of my wheelguns fail and I am just about to shell out the big bucks to send my para 1640 back because the stupid firing pin blocking safety drags on the firing pin giving light strike "NO BANG" misfires about once every 20 or 30 rounds. I should have known there was a problem when I saw the serial number was STN666.

I talked to Ruger about a new Vaquero barrel. They said no problem, like $37 for the replacement 4 5/8th inch or 5 1/2 inch barrel, estimated something like $40 to install(?), and $20 more for finishing matching (I think she might have thought the gun was blued, do you finish match stainless?) and then I have to pay shipping there and back as well.

I think that all sounds pretty reasonable, so I will be doing it... :D

Any body have any opinions as to going with the 4 5/8" or 5 1/2" barrel? I am leaning toward the shorter tube for holster carry, is there a particular reason anyone can think of that would make the extra inch (almost) of the 5 1/2 incher the smart way to go?

It's mostly a personal aesthetic thing I think. I went with the 5.5 in my SS Vaquero just because they look a little fatter and clunkier to me in the 4.75 configuration, and it just makes me happy.
As far as I've seen, there's a little better chance of finding a holster for a 4.75 in stock in a gun shop, but that may just be some wierd regional thing around here.
