I saw this Romanian Hi-Cap sitting on Gunbroker and I couldn't resist. Always wanted an AK and it was only $300 shipped with two magazines and 500 rounds of ammo. I was expecting a Century WASR cut up by Mr. Magoo, but when I got the rifle today I noticed the making "SAR-1" on the side. Something tells me I got a free upgrade on my rifle :D.

How did I do?

It also looks like somebody refinished the stock before shipping it out.

For now I need to stay off of Tapco's website or I'm going to spend waaay too much money. Until my birthday or something.

Good dealing you did there. :)

Oh, and some advice - avoid the TAPCO furniture, and save your pennies for the Ace stuff.

Here are some pics of the Ace sidefolder on a Saiga 223. Its the same as their short fixed stock with the addition of a folding hinge between the rear trunnion adapter and the front of the stock itself. It's QUITE solid and the rifle can be operated either with the stock folded or opened. When folded, this rifle is 27" long; just over the legal minimum. A rifle with a muzzle attachment would be a bit longer.

The TAPCO furniture is plastic and doesn't wear well.

You may know this already, but your overall length is calculated when the stock is fully extended.

Quick tip: You can spot a WASR-10 real easy, WASR's don't have mag dimples in the receiver, your SAR-1 does have mag dimples. Good thing you got that off gunbroker, 'cause I would have done the same thing if you hadn't seen it first;)

A WASR-10 is worth $300 and a SAR-1 is worth about $75 to $100 more. You got about $500 worth of stuff for $300, I would agree it's a good deal.

I bought a WASR-10 for $319 at a gun shop which came with 2X30 round mags, cleaning kit and a sling.

rbernie ... did you have to specially mod your saiga .223 ... or did the aftermarket parts just drop in?

i just got a .223 sporter myself, and was about to do the dreaded cosmetic redo but if i can avoid that, that would be majorly kewl.

Nice AK! It's taken a few years (and the recent purchase of a Saiga in .223 ;)) but the AK is growing on me more and more.

And I love / dread any post that ends with "How'd I do?" -- it usually means (as here) that the poster did very well indeed! Congratulations, and enjoy your gloating ;)

The Saiga in the pics was converted by someone else - I bought it with the basic AK conversion complete. I added the new stock and pistol grip, and those were basic AK parts that bolted right on. The Ultimak install used a standard AK Ultimak, but I had to grind the top of the handguard to make room for it.

That wood doesn't look refinished at all. SAR's came with about a half pound of varnish on the stocks. They don't really look good, but they're about 10 times better than the rough sanded and dipped in oil look of the WASR10's.

You got a very good deal.

elmerfudd,
You're right about the WASR-10, the wood looks terrible when you get it. I rubbed in some Cherry Stain and put a few coats of Tung Oil on mine and it looked much better.

That is an AWESOME deal.

I paid $379 for my SAR-1 and 2 magazines in 2003...and felt I got a decent deal. These days, SAR's are worth more, since they are no longer imported and they have the more authentic AKM style receiver.

Here's mine with a Kobra sight ($179 from Tantal):

Elmerfudd is right; that's the from-the-factory finish, I think (looks just like mine).
