I went to a new gun store today that a fellow I met at the range works at and found a whole bunch of 1911's. I'm saving to buy one and still deciding what to get. So far the springfield milspec has pretty much gotten the bid. This will be a piece for carry and for IDPA, so reliability is the first concern. I'm really just looking for a trigger that isnt horrible and good sights, like some novaks.

So to the point, I saw a few pieces I liked, but they had a fairly nice looking one that was a Brolin arms. I havent ever really heard of this maker before, does anyone know much about them? Quality, good prices, etc? This one has some good fixed sights, extended safety, and other general upgrades.

Would the money be better spent on the springfield? Im not going to throw down a very rare 350 dollars for something subpar when just a little more saving will get me something worth having.

Just to add a few more questions, how much would an average smith charge for a trigger job? Or to install some new sights?

Thanks for any help!

I've seen reviews of the marque in Gun Tests, but I don't recall what they said, and my collection of back issues is at a friend's home. Sorry, partner.

Brolin was shortlived and kind of rough looking to my eye.

I might take a chance on one, if really cheap, but I have a good local 'smith to fix it if necessary. If you don't, get a current make to have some factory support.

If you want an "upgraded" gun, you can probably buy a Springfield Loaded for less total money than by tarting up a Milspec. Novak will charge $170+ to furnish and install a set of LoMount sights which require remachining the slide front and rear.

Sights that fit the standard dovetail and mortise will, of course, be a lot less expensive but they still have to be put on, especially the front; staking in a sight takes a few specific tools and some skill.

A trigger job on the factory parts would be $50 from my guy, most places will charge that or more.

Brolin 1911

Go with the Springfield if it is in the price range of what you can afford. I would also recomend a good Kimber or clean 1991 Colt. Brolin went out of business about a year or 2 ago i think. I would not touch it or a Charles Daly . Stick with Colt, Kimber and Springfield is my opinion. I tell you this from experience.

The quality of the Brolin 1911 pattern pistols is best described as spotty. Although I have only seen about a dozen total and most were pretty good I have seen 3 or 4 that didn't seem as good as they should have been. 2 or 3 were impressive though.

On the other hand I've used several of their magazines and they seem to work 100%.
