Brooklyn Man Kills Burglar in Bedroom

By JAMIE SCHRAM and PERRY CHIARAMONTE

December 29, 2003 -- A Brooklyn man blew away an intruder who broke into his apartment yesterday in an apparent robbery attempt, authorities said.

The would-be crook broke into the first-floor apartment at 600 E. 16th St. in Flatbush at around 6:45 p.m., and ran into the tenant in the bedroom, police sources said.

That's when the intruder pulled out a fake gun - and the resident responded by shooting him one time in the face with a real 9mm handgun.

The burglar was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second suspect was arrested last night, but police said it was unclear what his role was.

Cops said the shooter was at home with his girlfriend when the robber broke in, possibly through a window.

He called 911 after killing the intruder and was taken with his girlfriend to the 70th Precinct station house for further questioning, cops said.

It was not clear whether he had a permit for the gun, but he was not immediately charged.

Police said the 29-year-old dead man, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was driving a gray Acura with a Massachusetts license plate.

His girlfriend, Liline Augustin, 25, said he was a construction worker who used to live in the building.

She said they have a 1-year-old son.

"All I know is that I got a call that he was shot and I came down here to see what happened," Augustin said.

"I've known him for five years. He's never done anything bad. He's known for being a really good person."

The building's superintendent, Carl Jagdal, 44, said the tenants in the apartment the man was trying to rob "seem nice," but "you never know.

"People say hello and goodbye all the time, but you don't know what happens behind closed doors."

Neighbors said the burglarized couple have two children who were not home at the time of the shooting.

The home owner better plan on spending time in jail. That's the way it works in New York.

Didn't an Air Force guy just go through this in New York when he shot somebody entering his child's bedroom window not that long ago?

Proving again that the crook is always a "really good person". Reminds me of the man in Brooklyn that the neighbors said was very nice , he was always polite to them. He was a mafia member and died in a "hit".

so, the guy who was defending himself "seemed nice. . . but you never know" but the piece of ???? who tried to rob him IN HIS OWN APARTMENT has "never done anything bad" and "is known for being a really good person?" Stuff like this outrages me. Assuming the gun was legal, the shooter should be given a medal by the mayor on the steps of city hall. I don't understand what's so hard to understand about this case. The shooter thought he was about to shot and did what any self respecting person would/should do, he defended himself.:fire: :cuss:

"Assuming the gun was legal he should be given a medal?"

[sarcasm]No handguns are legal in NYC![/sarcasm]

This guy shot and killed an armed intruder. I say give him a medal even if he himself just got out of prison.

:banghead:

he's really a good person
.

Not so good that he wasn't found in another man's bedroom brandishing what appeared to be a firearm. Lemme guess, he only did it to get $ to feed his one year old? Nonetheless, he got his rewards and busy working on rehabilitation through reincarnation.

MadMan: "Previous posts" means the last story out of NYC.

As stated above, a US military veteran moves into NYC with girlfriend and child. BG shows up in his apartment. Vet pulls a gun, shoots BG.

Vet, with absolutely clean record, gets charged and eventually gets jail time even though the guy is working 2 jobs to make ends meet.

Thus, the statement from the copshop means: if the gun was not licensed, this guy is going to jail. We don't care if he was defending his life, or the life of his girlfriend. We don't care that the BG produced a deadly weapon after breaking and entry. We don't care, period. In NYC, you can't HAVE a gun, and you can't USE a gun.

Die, instead. We'll come by eventually to get you buried.

As quite often happens, initial conclusions are mistaken...according to this news article, the man WAS charged with criminal possession of a weapon. However, they also found a pound of weed in the apartment. Statist members, please feel free to post the obligatory scumbag references, including some (hopefully) creative variations, on how the lowlife deserves to meet up with old sparky...

However, the reputation of the home defender really has no bearing on the basic injustice of NY gun regulations, does it?

Apt. Shooter Arrested on Pot, Gun Charges

The man who fatally shot an intruder in Flatbush Sunday night was arrested after a pound of marijuana was found in his apartment, police said.

Police arrested Sheldon Barrow and his girlfriend, Beverly Seales, 35, after an investigation in the wake of the deadly shooting.

Initially, police said Barrow shot at two robbers breaking into his first-floor apartment at 600 E. 18th Street in Flatbush, where he lives with his girlfriend, two children and a pit bull.

After conducting an investigation, police said they found a pound of marijuana, which they carried out in a black trash bag.

Police said they still are investigating whether the two would-be robbers targeted Barrow's apartment because of the marijuana.

According to police, at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, two armed men double-parked a Acura Legend in front of Barrow's building and went inside.

They broke into Barrow's apartment and demanded money. Barrow refused and struggled with the two men. He pulled out a .40-caliber gun and shot one of the men, Canton Fisher, 29, in the face.

Fisher died in the apartment. Police recovered a pellet gun from Fisher's body.

According to a spokesman for the Brooklyn District Attorney's office, Fisher was arrested on petty larceny charges of taking a television and a VCR from a Radio Shack in 1999 and again in 2000 for taking an article of clothing from Macy's. He pleaded guilty in both cases although he avoided jail time.

Neither Barrow nor Seales has a criminal record in Brooklyn, the spokesman said.

Police were looking for the other robber, who fled the scene last night.

Both Barrow and Seales are charged with criminal possession of marijuana. Barrow also was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. They were awaiting arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court last night.

Notice something the writer of the story didn't say?

He didn't refer to the burglar as a "victim." Most of the stories we read about here on THR state the BG was a "victim" of the shooting.

Kudos to the writer for at least getting that part right.
