This is sad. I wonder if we had CCW here in WI if the man would have armed himself with a gun.

Neighbor killed as he confronts burglar

Police were searching Sunday for a burglar who shot and killed a 38-year-old man who confronted him with a baseball bat in the 5100 block of N. 65th St.

Captain Tim Burkee of the Milwaukee Police said a woman who lives in the house that was burglarized was driving home about 10 p.m. yesterday when she saw a suspicious man outside her home. Presuming that he was attempting to break in, she called her husband, who was at work, from her cell phone. The husband called 911 and the neighbor.

The neighbor grabbed a baseball bat and went to the back door of the home belonging to his friends. A short time later, the suspect left the home by the back door. When threatened by the neighbor with the bat, he pulled a handgun killing the neighbor.

Police said they have no suspects in custody.

Never a good idea to bring pine to a lead fight.
Sad, in any case.

I don't see CCW as relevant in this case as he was on private property when it happened.

Had he a gun and a willingness to use it things might have been different. Dude took a bat to a gunfight and came out on the wrong end.

Hickory-fu doesn't beat gun-fu. Too bad about the neighbor and I bet the husband and the wife feel like ****.:( I hope the miscreant left prints around so he can be held to answer for murder.

I don't see what CCW would have to do with that. I live in wisconsin and I'm armed to the teeth :)
I think it has more to do with sheeple attitude that is starting to prevail in some parts here and willingness to beleive that guns are evil and the LEO's will always be there to protect us. Hail Doyle

No, the neigbor got a bat and confronted the burgler. If the neighbor had a gun, any gun, the fight might have been totaly the reverse. This is a case of, like knives, bringing a club to a gunfight. Bad idea unless the range the fight starts at is clubing range.

The neighbor could, if he had one, just got his shotgun, but maybe he didn't own guns and that bat was it. In this day and age getting a gun is not hard, and thus expect any burgler or house breaker to be armed. They might not be, but in this case they were.

I would have thought the "smart" thing to do would have been to stay at the neighbor's until the cops cleared the house.

But maybe she couldn't get out?

I don't see CCW as relevant in this case as he was on private property when it happened.
But he wasn't on his private party. He was also black. So if he had investigated his neighbor's house with a gun after the neighbor had called, the DA may claim he was looking for trouble and should have waited for police instead. Nevermind that his neighbor gave him permission to carry a gun onto his property.
Unreasonable? Sure, but a real risk. That is how things work in Milwaukee. Who you are will play a part in the prosecutor's decision.
IIRC, there have been cases in other states where a person hears a suspicious noise outside and investigates with a gun. They get charged in the aftermath because the sound is outside.
Wisconsin not only doesn't have concealed carry laws, it has no castle law or justifiable homicide. It is entirely up to the discretion of the DA - whichever way the political wind is blowing.

I pay taxes for the privilage of living in my city.
Those taxes go in part to pay the police to do just this kind of job.

I'm assuming from the wordiing of the article that the woman was driving in her car when she noticed the burgler.

Why was there any need to confront the BG at all.

If I were the home owner I would have the gun in the car,if i had no gun I would drive to the neighbor's and call the cops, If I were the neighbor, I would not have come over with out a gun period. That was a sad incedent

I remember

A conversation with an anti, he said "just get a baseball bat"...
Burglary is a felony, if you're going to confront a felon & your
not a cop, don't do it unless you're armed & have trained yourself to catch armed badguys :(

This is indeed a tragic situation and the poor victims family is deserving
of our prayers.

Let this be a lesson to all of us to have a plan and a plan B as well.

I'm with Joab on this one. If there is no one but the BG in the house then there is no one in danger. Leave him alone and let the cops deal with him. There are more of them and they are trained to take down guys like this. If that means they don't arrive in time and he gets away so be it, no one got hurt or killed.

That guy foolishly stuck his neck out going in there.

Wouldn't have needed a CCW for a shotgun.

I feel bad for the guy -- he was trying to help. This is what the police have in mind when they tell citizens not to try to apprehend criminals. :(

semi poor choice of weapons, real poor choice of tactics.

if i have a bat and im waiting for bg to come out my back door im not going to be where he can spot me and i sure aint gonna threaten him no.

im going to be around the corner/behind something and he wont know what caved his head in.

As others have said, one does not take a knife or a club to a gunfight. However, if the neighbor had taken a shotgun with him, which may have gotten him around the lack of CCW & castle laws up there, he would probably have found himself the de-facto BG with the local LEO's had he prevailed over the real BG. The asinine laws on the books around this country favor criminals, while they make criminals of those of us who are law-abiding, and who would step up to try to help others.

+1 What he said.

However, as a number of people have said... don't be there.
