the buttstock on one of my 1885's feels slightly loose, anyone know how to go about tightening it up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Sam

You have to remove the butt plate first. Unfortunately it's been 5 years since I had mine off and I can't remember what size socket you need to tighten it.

This may sound stupid, but how do I get the buttplate off. I am fairly new to these rifles and I have never had one apart. I do not see any way to remove the plate.
Thanks Sam

Mine has the steel butt plate with one screw on top and one in the back. If you have the model with the rubber recoil pad there will be two screws in the back.

There should be two tiny slits in the rubber which you can barely find. These usually take a small-medium phillips head screwdriver, the screws are hidden under the recoil pad so after you find the slits just stick the screwdriver in until you feel the metal screw, then start turning.

Thanks for your help, that is what I was thinking, but I did not want to tear something up.
Thanks Sam

Put some Vaseline or other lube on the slits and the screw driver shank before you try to "stab" it into the slits and turn it.
