This is not another opinion post, well at least not the typical one anyway. I was picking some NRA raffle tickets the other day and was directed to the gun case by the shop owner. He knows I'm a lefty and always tries to suck me into a purchase. Well anyhow it an A-Bolt .270 wsm, with a Burris Fullfield, wood stock, with sling. Looked like it hadn't been shot very much and the only thing I saw after a quick look was a 6 inch +/- scratch on the left side of the butt. I did not pay much attention to the power of the scope, but did see that it went to like 14.5 or something similar to that. I'm 99% sure the rifle was a hunter model and not a medallion. So, the asking price was $635. Not sure what to do and I don't know the shape of the barrel or scope....... What do you guys think about the price...

Uh, no. A scratched up stock? And a Burris. I would offer the fella 500. If not, pass on it and keep your money.

I'm not sure about the scope. Brownings are a little more expensive, so they could cost more. Then again, a lot of those new WSM rifles are going for less (they usually put those on sale), so I'd probably pass unless I really liked the rifle.

Stay under 6 bills....you'll do good with that deal, providing everything about the rig is A-OK.

What brand/type of bases and rings are on the rifle? Also, grab the ocular bell of the scope and apply some side-to-side torque to it, if it moves back and forth more than a few thousands, forget the deal, unless the guy will come down to say....$475 or so.

Ok. The $500 mark is what I was thinking, because I only buy used if its a good deal. As far as the stock goes, I don't care about the scratch, I was going to use it as a way to get it for a better price. I, unlike most, don't expect rifles to look all that pretty once they have been used. I guess I'm a modern guy the main issue about the stock was it was wood, usually only buy synthetic, just was considering it if I could get it for the right price.... Forgetting the scope issue what should it be worth? I could and probably will sell/replace the scope

Being a wood stock guy, I certainly do care about the scratches.

I've never bought used, but always thought it was kind of weird used rifles are always sold with scopes...I would think very often they get replaced. Is there no market for used scopes?

$635 is probably not a rip off, but I'm like you. There's no reason to buy used unless it's a good deal. If you pay what something's worth, just buy new. I'd offer $500 and probably go up to $550 when he counters.

That's just me.
