I have an opportunity to buy a new Burris Fullfield II Ballistic Plex E1 4-5-14X 42mm for $270. I know it's a great price, but I don't know much about the scope. The reviews are very good, but I was hoping someone out there who owns one can give me some feedback. I'm planning to put it on a yet-to-be-purchased rifle, but maybe a 257 Roberts.

I don't know if the E1 is a different scope than the regular FFII, or if it's just a different reticle. Burris has a $100 rebate on the FFII, so you could get that for around $185.

That particular scope sells new for around $350, so yes $270 is a good price if you like the scope.

Burris makes good scopes, I like the regular FF-II a lot better though. A 3-9X40 will be under $150 with the rebate. I like the scope and reticle better on the FF-II even at the same price. You are paying a lot of money for a little more magnification that most people can't use.

If you really want the magnification I go this way with the $100 rebate.

Hi.
I work at Burris.

The E1 was designed to be the successor to the FF II, but we're selling both, as the FFII remains very popular. The E1 is a bit more streamlined, a bit more modernized, and has similar but updated reticles. It's almost as if Ford decided to keep the old F150 on the market, selling alongside the new model. It's JMR40's fault: he likes the old one better (obviously just joking. The FFII remains a best seller for good reasons).

The rebate ends on Dec. 31st (must be purchased by then).

SHOT show coming up in January, with some good announcements from us (and everyone else in the industry).

Thanks for considering us.

I ended up ordering the FFII, not the E1. Saved a bit of money and I didn't really need the E1 reticle. I had a Burris years ago but sold it to my nephew. He still has it and likes it. I have several Leupolds and like them, but looking to spend less money. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks for the helpful narrative.

Since you're here, and you're a Burris guy, I have a question for you.
Burris makes 5 different 3-9X40 scopes. FFII, E1, C4, Droptine, Predator Quest. Are they all equal in optical and mechanical quality? Are the differences only in the cosmetics and features?

The FFII 4.5-14x42 is a VERY GOOD scope, IMO, and an absolute steal at the current price with the $100 rebate. I have systematically compared them to my Japan-built Sightron SII 6-24x42 and Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44, as well as a number of other scopes I have. I used an optical resolution target at 135 yards for the most formal comparison, graded each scope on a few different factors related to clarity and resolution. This is the target I used.

At any given magnification power up to its 14x maximum, the FFII was at least as good as, if not ever so slightly better than, the two scopes mentioned above (these two are widely considered by many who own them to be good ~$400-$450 street price scopes, and I agree). After this very enlightening comparison test I bought three more of the Burris scopes. Here's the scope on a 527 Carbine.

On a related note, I highly recommend doing a careful side-by-side comparison of your scopes. You are likely to discover some things that you never realized before if you've never done the side-by-side controlled comparison. For me, I found that some of my scopes that I thought were pretty good, and I thought were pretty much the equal of other scopes in my collection, were in fact not nearly as good as I thought. Some of the scopes that I was pretty happy with before are now removed from the guns and on the "plan to sell" shelf. :)

Interesting report on your scopes.
As far as comparing scopes, and then having to replace some; been there, done that.

I should have my new scope in a couple of weeks. However, I have yet to buy the rifle on which I will mount it. I've narrowed my selection to a .270 or a .257 Roberts. Then another decisison....Remington, Kimber, Cooper??? Ahh, decisions, decisions...........
