Howdy,

Happened to see a BAR "carbine" in 30-06 at the local gun shop today... asked the owner about it and he claimed that Browning made a carbine model in the caliber for two years, which caused the two old timers to start arguing that they never did such a thing and the barrel had to have been cut down by the previous owner. (live in a very small town, and the old timers move from the coffee shop in the morning to hang out in the gun/gear shop until early afternoon; the fact that I got to see them in a three person argument/ball busting session was just a bonus. Great guys).

Anywho, intrigued as to whether or not this was cut down at the factory or not... seems like an interesting tool for the deer woods here in Vermont, though I'm not sure how much fun it would be to shoot.

Thanks!

Dunno 'bout this particular rifle, but if there were two such carbine lengths side by side, one in .308 and one in .30-'06, I'd take the .308 every time.

Lighter and equal performance for deer hunting. If 18", the .308 might even have a bit better muzzle velocity.

And I've been an '06 guy since 1950. :)

I agree with you Art, my favorite woods rifle now is a Remington 600 in .308... love the caliber and the length, and the Pachmayr on the receiving end helps it be a bit more tolerable as well.

I think I was more curious about whether or not this rifle is the real deal or if someone had it cut down... doesn't have the fluted barrel though, so I don't think it's quite as rare as the previous link stated, although what do I know?

Thanks for the replies.

That just ain't gonna happen. With many bolt rifles you will find the 308 version to be lighter and trimmer, but with pumps and semi's they will be the same. If we were talking about a 6 lb 308 vs an 8 lb 30-06 I'd pick the 308. But not in this case.

It actually makes more sense to use a shorter barreled 30-06 than 308 if you are wanting bullet speed. Everything being equal the 30-06 will be about 150-200 fps faster with 22"-24" barrels. Yes the 30-06 will lose a tiny bit more as it is cut shorter, but since it starts out faster, it still finishes a lot faster. While a 30-06 will be 150-200 fps faster at 22" expect it to still be about 125-175 fps faster at 18"

My 20" 30-06 rifles are still faster than a 24" 308.

So to bring this thing full circle, the rifle was manufactured in 2001 as a 30-06 carbine to be a SHOT show exclusive... has an alloy receiver, nice and light, great pointing carbine... fun to shoot too; couldn't pass it up.

Thanks!
