Hi, I'm new to this board and was hoping someone could help me. I just purchased a very slightly used 20ga BPS. However it came with only a full choke tube. While looking for replacements I discovered that there are both Invector and Invector Plus. The box the gun came in says Invector, the choke in the gun says Plus. Are these chokes interchangeable? What are the differences? Its primarily for my son for target practice.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Broadbill

AFAIK the chokes are not interchangeable. Also, AFAIK the Invector is the same as a standard Winchester choke. This is from 12 Gauge, though; 20 can be different.

The barrel should say Invector or Invector Plus on it, though. I'd trust that. Pump barrels are often swapped, hence the discrepancy between the box and the barrel.

Both types of choke are readily available. http://www.mpcsports.com/

Boy I feel foolish. Never dawned on me to read the barrel.
It seemed kinda long compared to a winchester choke.
But that might just be that the smaller gauge made it look that way.

Thanks,

Broadbill

P.S. I'm not familiar with AFAIK. I got the jist of it and I think the knowledge part but I'm stumped on the rest.

As Far As I Know

A general disclaimer, since my Browning and most of the Brownings belonging to people I know are 12 gauges. :)

I own a 12 gauge browning bps and it uses invector plus chokes. You might try the browning website.

Browning switched from Invector to Invector Plus at some point. There are a lot of Invector guns and barrels out there. My BT-99 has Invectors; I shoot with people who have other BT's that have fixed-choke barrels or Invector Plus chokes. Most of Browning's product line was in production when Invector was the standard; at some point, they just changed the chokes while keeping their product line pretty much as-is.

Only with newer models like the Cynergy will you not find any Invector examples.

Thanks guys,
Just judging by the pictures on the Browning website I'm gonna guess its Invector Plus. I will read the barrel when I get home but it sure seemed longer than my Rem chokes and definitely longer than the Win chokes in my pigeon.
On the plus side, if I'm not mistaken the Invector plus designation means that I have a backbored barrel which should help with the recoil for my son.

Thanks alot,

Broadbill

True: the Invectors are about the same length as Remchokes, while the Invector Plus choke tubes are unmistakeably longer.

Invector plus designation means that I have a backbored barrel

I'm not too sure about that. I've got a Browning 425 which has Invector+ chokes and IIRC, the 425 was not factory back-bored (even though the 325 was).

I'm not arguing in the least. Remember I'm the one who came here asking advice, but these are quotes from the Browning website. However it is an article on backboring and I may have things out of context. At any rate I've checked the barrel and it is indeed an Invector Plus. I don't have the tools required to measure the internal barrel to know for sure if its backbored. But the initial question was simply what kind of chokes I needed and you've helped me find the answer to that.

............................................................The saga continues..........

"The Invector system is available for 12 and 20 bore Browning shotguns. The Invector system has evolved into two different versions : the standard Invector and the Invector-Plus for back-bored barrels. Depending on your requirements, there is an Invector system which will give you that vital advantage, whether hunting or target shooting."

"Invector-Plus System
These tubes have been designed for the new {{back-bored}} bands. A forcing cone which is too short and deforms shot can adversely affect patterns. This is why Invector-plus tubes have been lengthened and given a special tapered design. This ensures tighter patterns and more uniform densities. The Invector-Plus is only available for {{back-bored}} barrels. It is only suitable for 12 bore guns and is not interchangeable with the Standard Invector choke."

Thank you,

Broadbill

This will shut some guys up at my club. For about a year a couple of guys have been trying to get me to lengthen the forcing cones in my 525. (Even though it patterned well and felt better than most guns I've shot.) Go figure. All this time they are working on my head not my aim???
