The Mk III frame on the left is forged. The one on the right with the "ripples" is cast. This is an easy way to tell the type frame a Mk III pistol has. (No Mk II's had cast frames.) This is not always 100% accurate as there are some guns which are transitional guns but as a general rule of thumb this is a good indicator.

Below is the key to FN dates of manufacture via the serial numbers.Also MKIII came into existence in 1988. So you can also determine what version by looking at the serial number. So for example 245NW82340 was manufactured in 1994.

Per "Browning Dates of Manufacture", 1988, Brownsboro
TX, Art and Reference House:

Z = 1
Y = 2
X = 3
W= 4
V = 5
T = 6
R = 7
P = 8
N= 9
M= 0

Marshall no apologizes necessary... good info should always be shared. Mr. Camps site is a great resource. He posts here every so often.
