I do not now nor have I ever owned a Hi-Power, though I've always liked the looks of them. New Hi-Powers are not approved for sale here in Massachusetts so only older ones are occasionally seen for sale.

I was in the gunstore today and I saw a nice older Browning and I immediately coveted it. It had only a right hand safety. I am left handed. My question, of course, is how involved a job would it be to install an extended ambi safety on a Hi-Power of this type. Needless to say, I wouldn't want to see it "butchered".

What I know about Hi-Powers can be put in a thimble and rattled around. Can anyone help me out on this question.

I am of two minds on this. On the one hand I'd like to have a usable classic Hi-Power (which for me means an ambi safety) and on the other hand I was at the gunstore to buy a Sig Mosquito and to order a Sig 239 in 9mm and I really don't need to spend any more on my gun habit for a while.

Well, I installed a Cylinder & Slide extended safety on my old ( made about 1964 ) Hi-Power inside of about 45 minutes. So if you have any mechanical aptitude at all, you should be able to follow their directions and install their ambi safety easily enough. And installing a new one doesn't require altering the old safety or the gun in any way.... it's just a bit of filing on the new part.
Cylinder & Slide can be found here: Cylinder & Slide

You can also find their parts at Midway USA and Brownell's.

What Jamie said, the Cylinder and Slide parts are excellent. Since I'm so hamfisted when it comes to metal I'd probably just let them install it though.

But wait - - There's MORE!

Yet another benefit of the C&S safety latch. The older model P35 safety just kinda moves from one position to another. The C&S model has a positive detent and engages or disengages with a positive *click*. Not a loud noise; more felt than heard, but nicely positive. That's the only modification I've made on my old T-series pistol. Other than removal of the magazine disconnect, of course. ;)

Best,
Johnny
