Guns laws in Cambodia are very, very strict. It was very easy to buy prior to 1998, everything was available on black market and laws were non-existent. Since 1998, thanks to UN and world bank influence and other NGOs, gun laws have now become very strict. Many guns after ban was imposed in 1998, which most were illegal anyway, were destroyed. Kind of divided on the issue, was good in a way having the ban. Not good going to a restuarant with a bunch of drunk cambodians shooting their AKs into the roof. But, problem is most criminals still have. Would be nice if average citizens could get liscences, but don't see that happening. Would be nice if maybe AKs were outlawed but they would allow At least LEver actions, shotguns, bolt actions, and handguns. PArt of the reason they are scared and outlawed weapons was due to the coup in 1997. Also, the disarming of the Khmer Rouge finally in 1998. The automatic penalty for being caught with a firearm with out a liscence is one year in prison (a cambodian prison
) Of course there is so much corruption you can buy your way out of just about anything. To get a liscence you need to have some serious government connections and be a working with or for the Cambodian Military or Law Enforcement. Getting guns here is about impossible. There is no place to buy them and getting a import liscence through Ministry of Interior takes a long long almost impossible time. Most of the guns for sale on black market are in really bad shape. And even if you can get a gun, ammo is near impossible to get. :banghead: The military and law enforcement do have old Ak47, and usually 38 or 32 revolvers and makarov pistols. There are some good quality firearms floating around the law enforcement and military community, usually in the higer ranks and left over from the old days. So if you know them and have the connections you may be able to get something good like a Glock, Para Ordnance, Colt 1911, etc.. Again, getting the gun is easier than getting the ammo. I am fortunate to be one of the very few (less than 10) foreigners working with Cambodian military and law enforcement, so I do get many chances to shoot here. As for what I carry or own or what type of carry permit I have, if any, best to leave that confidential.
