Browing Machine Gun Model Project

For an AP English project, I am making a mock up model of a Browning Machine Gun- This will be because I read a WWII novel called The Naked and the Dead. Does anyone have any ideas on
1. How I should go about doing the project?
-Currently, I have 2 small boxes measuring 6.5in each- I will duct tape the whole thing together, but I'm not sure what I will use for the barrel. Any ideas would be welcome
2. What kind of information should I include for the Browning machine gun? The more, the better- and I want to stun the audience with information.

Check with the school before you do this. It may land you on a vacation from school.

You could use copper tubing from Home Depot for the barrel. Buy a can of spray paint while you are there.

I can send you a book and two of my FCSA magazines that are on the history of the .50 BMG. All I ask for is for them to be returned back to me. Want a piece of brass, loaded round or something there abouts?

You could go to your local hobby store and see if they have a small model of a .50. You can even try ebay, there's usually something there. Type in "50 cal" and that should give you a few pages to look at.

If you want to borrow the stuff just PM me with your addy and I'll send it out.

If I remember right, one of the editions of "Small Arms of the World" has a scale drawing of the .50 M2 HB; HTH, and take some pictures for us

The barrel is just a rolled up poster board paper, with duct tape- lot's of it. To keep it in place, I stuck in a piece of wire, and I used thread and duct tape it keep it in one piece. I bent it at the end, to keep the barrel from falling out- but it looks like a front sight.

Here's the threading i was talking about. Any suggestions, comments? What would be an effective way to do the handle or the trigger or maybe the rear sights?

This gun looks fake right now, but I'm toying with the idea of adding a trigger and a bolt.. I don't want it to look too real at this stage since I'll have to get it by the school administrators. Any suggestions?

...I'd drop the model concept and put something together using power point....should be able to find some really good illustrations. Then if the administration gets stinky about the content, they'll be forced to deal with censorship of printed material....a real can of worms....

Do you have any friends in wood shop?

If so, wood makes for excellent weapon mock ups. It's a bit heavy and more expensive but its much more sturdy than cardboard and it won't fall apart or look crappy. An you can have it for years and years to boot.

I was wondering which particular Browning machine gun you were talking about too. Is it the .50, .30, air cooled, water cooled, etc?

If it is a .50, a full scale model cardboard or otherwise will be a monster. Those things are a lot bigger than you would think.

If it is a .50, and you wanted a really good sturdy model, I'd go with a box made of thin cheap fiber board, wood not cardboard. Just glue it together and use dowl rods or PVC tubing for the barrel, charging handle, and spade grips.

what has a bmg got to do with the naked and the dead? have you actually read it yet? if not, try that and then think up a good project, i think you can do a little better'n that young feller...

My main thesis will be that war is unproductive. As an attention getter, I plan to say "The browning .30 caliber machine gun was machine man capable of firing 600 .30 caliber rounds per minute, this weapon could wreck havoc if used properly. When John Moses Browning designed this machine gun, he did not design for hunting purposes, nor did he design it for wounding- he designed this gun to kill people." I think that will definately get attention. Any additional info/suggestions/insults will be greeeeeeatly apprieciated.

By the way, Sgt.Croft uses the BMG to defend his platoon against the invading Japanese who try to cross the river, and I thought that the BMG kind of symbolized security/combat.

you're in college right? If so, I don't think you'll have too many problems getting it by the administration...If you're still in high school, maybe mention it to your teacher, show the pics, etc... I just graduated in 2000 and my HS let me bring in a sword and a mace (spiked ball on chain on stick, not the spray) for a presentation. You may want to clear it with teach before going too much farther on it so as not to waste your time. The power point presentation was a good idea too...no law that says you can't show pictures of guns in school

War is unproductive?

And using JMB's machine gun to emphasize THAT thesis? War, for whatever reason, only becomes unproductive when it becomes drawn out. When it draws out it taxes the warring nations and population too much in money, culture, growth, people, collateral damage, etc. Most weapon developments attempt to minimize the duration of a conflict by maximizing the destructive power of the weapon. JMB's .30 cal is a tool to do just that much like the longbow or fat man and little boy.

Anyway, sorry for getting off topic and I didn't mean to counter your thesis. It is Friday before caffeine and I'm confused and just don't understand the logic.

I do however enjoy a good argument and I'd like to read the report if you've written one and wouldn't mind posting or sending it to me.

Gave my presentation today- and my teacher apparently thought the way I used the machine gun was good, since I got a 23 out of 25 possible points.
