I picked up a browning sweet sixteen recently, and I have a couple questions.

1. do the sweet sixteens have the fiber buffer at the rear of the reciever like the auto-5?

2. where can i find a copy of the pictogram that goes inside the foreend that lists the ways to arrange the friction rings?

3. does the sweet sixteen use the same friction rings and whathaveyou as the auto five? if not where can i find them?

4. is it normal for sweet sixteens to have nicer triggers than tuned m-1a's?

First of all, a Sweet Sixteen is an Auto-5, just a 16ga version.

1. Yes

2. Browning detail.

3. Yes

4. Depends on the gun. Mine have very nice triggers.

Those guns are typically junky and not worth the wood they are made out of. You should sell it as soon as possible.

I'll be a nice guy and take it off your hands for $50.

As the proud owner of a Very good + condition, 1940's Auto-5, i can say withought a doubt, that YES, it is normal for them to have sweet trigers. :D

Also, yes, the sweet 16 is is identical to the A-5 in all ways, except it is chambered in 16 guage.

Congrats. I just picked one up myself. Finally see what all the hubbub is about.

Just for the record, mine has an incredible trigger too....

now that i've established that they're supposed to have the fiber buffer, how do i go about replacing a lost one?

mine doesn't have one anymore.

Andrew--I'm not sure what "fiber" buffer you are talking about. To my knowledge the two peices on the mag tube are the bronze friction ring and the steel ring with the taper on one side that it fits into for heavy loads. Have you tried Browning for parts?? Nick.

Anyone have a breakdown photo that shows these fiber inserts? My dad's 16 is older than I am, and I presume they do wear and fade away. I'd like to know where they are so I can check to see if they are still intact!

Thanks for the help!

Bob

took it out to the local range, fired six rounds through it. had 4 failues to eject. i think i probably need to change the setting on the friction rings.

I can't find the buffer listed anywhere in the parts breakdowns.

I took my A5 apart and it didn't have a fiber buffer. I also couldn't find one listed in any of the parts list schematics that I have seen. I emailed Midwest Gunworks, Inc asking for clarification on whether an A5 had a fiber buffer and they replied "No, the A5 does not use it.

Andrew, I believ it hinges on the age of your shotgun.

I've got a very early Remington Model 11, which was a domestic-manufactured copy of the Browning Auto 5, and it has no fiber buffer in the receiver's humpback, and shows no rivet or mounting location for that part on close inspection. Perhaps the buffer was a later production addition to the Auto 5, and the Sweet 16 variants?
