I have "Ineedanewgunitus" and have settled on 7mm-08 in either the browning xbolt stalker ss or the remington LSS mountain rifle. I'm buying one of the two for myself for Christmas (it will be from Santa).

I've read a lot of good things about the remington and I like the length, weight, etc but Browing is comparable in that way, has a very good reputation and I like the synthetic stock and removeable rotary clip concept. They both feel well balanced and neither is more comfortable than the other for me. The only thing that pushes me a little toward the remington is that the 700 has been around forever but the xbolt is relatively new. Any comments?

Note: I was originally looking at 300wsm but after shooting two of them and not enjoying the recoil at all, I decided to stay with my 1895 cowboy 45-70 as my "big bore" rifle (although I may get a marlin 1895LXR in 45-70 some day and throw a scope on it). This would close out my post "Best 300wsm".

I agree with the above...but greatly prefer the Browning A-Bolt over the new X-Bolt, it just doesn't feel as good to me. Also take a hard look at the new Winchester Model 70's as they are probably the best deal running right now.

:)

Both are awesome, but I would go with the Remington. The 700 has been around forever like you said, and that laminate stock and stainless look gorgeous to me. I guess that's the eye of the beholder though.

Thanks everyone. It was a tough decision, they are both quite nice. Held them both again yesterday but ultimately bought the Browning xbolt stainless. Now, off to search for just the right scope. I grew up a Leupold guy (own at least 6 variations) but may venture into another brand -- Zeiss conquest seems rugged. I feel another thread coming on!

Yep that 3-9x40 Conquest is hard to beat for the money. Leupold Ultralights work well too on an X-Bolt. At 8oz they keep it feeling petite and you can save a couple of hundred off the Conquest. The Conquest certainly has better optics though.

Thanks again. Going to buy the Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44; local shop has them at a decent price. It seems a tad heavy compared to other scopes but damn nice optics and feels very solid. Thanks everyone for your input. After all of this, I better bag some super game....

If you bought the Browning you made a great choice. No way I'd ever consider a Remington over a Browning. Remington just seems to have way too many quality control issues now adays. As for the scope it sounds like you are making a great choice on that too.
