BSA Illuminated Scopes any good?

Don't panic yet folks..I'm still determined to order a Leupold VX II 3x9 40mm scope for my new AR15 upper coming and mounting it with a 1 peice Armalite mount.

Still...I'd like to know just how good the BSA scopes are. For right about $100 I can get an illuminated model. So far that is $200 less than the nearest competitor. Are they a waste of money...or a good scope for the price?

I had one 4-16, I believe, that was without a doubt the clearest and best looking non-Platinum BSA scope I've ever looked through. Had it mounted on a Savage 308 for a while. The illumination definately could come in handy during the darkening hours. Though I never got the chance to use it on game, it worked well on paper.

I've got a BSA mil-dot illuminated reticle scope, 6-24x that I've had for about a year or so. Had it on everything from a Ruger 77-22 to my AR. No complaints with it. Granted, I've not mounted it on a .458 Win Mag, but then I'm not putting it on an RWS 45 airgun to check it for recoil resistance, either. I think for a scope in the hundred dollar range it does fine. I may stick it on one of my 6.5x55's to see how I like it there sometime over the summer when I'm playing on my range.

FYI, I bought it in store at Cheaper Than Dirt. Shameless plug.

For what I spent, I'm extremely pleased.

I've been pleased with all the BSA's I own.

I purchased an illuminated BSA to see if I really wanted an illuminated reticle before I spent a bunch of money on a higher end scope. I mounted it on my .22-250 and also tried it on my AR to use as a coyote gun at night.

Results?: I don't use it as a dedicated scope for either gun. I have other scopes I like better. But if I'm going to bust a few varmints at night I'll put the BSA on. I haven't felt the need to buy that higher end illuminated scope yet either.

Today's bargain priced scopes are much better with their technology than expensive scopes were 20 years ago. That being said though, they are still cheap scopes, compared quality wise with the better brands.

The trick is to balance quality with price. Look on the internet for what to judge a scope by, and compare the brands. You will find that in many cases, a particular scope from BSA, or Simmons will compare very well with a Leupold or Nikon.
