The deer isn’t large but I was darn proud of it, glad to have the meat. 105 Lbs live weight. He was the 5th buck I saw today (4th in a 10 minute period following a Doe bleat). I shot him quartering away, I didn’t feel very good about the shot as I let buck fever rush me. Last season I watched 4 bucks walk on my first day in this blind and ended the year with zero deer. When I was in the midst of all the deer today I saw flashbacks so I took one.

As I thought the shot was far back and a little low. Due to gut bloating I did not inspect his liver but I understand this blood may indicate a liver hit. However there was also lung material and bright red blood. As it turns out the exit wound was in the classic “bullseye” boiler room location, and the front right quarter is fairly bloody and bruised. When I tracked the deer, he actually got up, ran a few steps, and thudded over stone dead, about 30 yards from where I had shot him.

This bullet was laying on the ground About 10 yards behind where I shot him. I was worried again when I saw this, wasn’t sure if this lighter bullet I am using this year had bounced off the deer at 25 yards range or what! Not really sure how this even happened, there isn’t a drop of blood or hide on the bullet.

I shoot 295 grain Powerbelts and 80 grains of loose Pyrodex.
The last 3 deer I've shot with this load, there was a knot on the off side where the bullet had almost penetrated the hide, but didn't quite make it.
Yours apparently had just enough to go through and basically fall out.

I think that's pretty cool.

Congrats. And hang on to that bullet. I have one around here: an almost perfectly mushroomed .44 magnum that was under the skin on the far side of a nice buck I shot with a Ruger Super Redhawk in upstate NY a few years back. It's a great keepsake!

What are the odds of finding that after it exited the deer? Very few people can honestly lay claim to something like that. I'm sure you'll always have that bullet with that rack. That sort of thing has happened to me once and probably never again. Had to dig out my notes to recall the date; Nov.22nd, 1997..... Put a Foster style slug through a fat broadside doe at a little under 20 yds... It went through slightly downward; exited and went into a foot of snow. It left a long line in the snow that deepened and turned into a tunnel. Dug my hand in there and pulled out my slug. Still have it to this day. Here's some shots of it next to an unfired Foster slug for comparison. IMG_1968.JPG IMG_1969.JPG Like Ks5shooter said; put it with the antlers......Or just save it..... Or someday you'll be kicking yourself.
