Buckmaster 184

I picked up a Buck 184 the one with the patent number on it and I was wondering cause I had seen them on ebay for well over a hundred dollars and I though well must be halfway decent is it actually a good knife? It is an original its not even sharpened the guy I bought it from said he just never had a use for it. I paid 50 bucks for it. I know its not a full tang blade but it does seem pretty sturdy.

I had a chance to buy one of those, but didn't because I learned "it wasn't made by Buck."

I would have been paying about $40 for it.

It's not a knife I'd normally buy, as I'm not a tremendous fan of the style, but it's quite a serviceable knife nonetheless.

I have a miniature version (3" blade) done in Japan by Edgecraft. I've only ever seen one, and it's the one I have. I would have been have been happier, I think, with a four-inch or four-point-five-inch blade and a fatter handle, but the one I have is quite useful as is.

You have a relatively rare knife, and Buck does quality stuff.

If you intend to use it in the field, I'd like to see the field test results.

Well I am still wondering if I should use it I have a KA-BAR for regular field use, this was sort of a deal that came along and I thought well..why not.

Depends

If you're thinking of "collecting" it, then the field test is out of the question. Its collector value would appeal to a fairly narrow group.

In your shoes, I would use the Ka-Bar, but that's a) because I like the style better, and b) because there are plenty more if I wreck mine.

However, if you're not going to "collectorize" the Buckmaster, I'd love a field report.

Don't use it!!!

I know how you feel, I've had my Buck 184 since 1985 and have never used it!!! To collectors they are worth big bucks if you have all the pieces, paperwork... Like you said, on ebay they go for at least $300+ if they have everything that they came with. Even just the knife will bring in a couple hundred if it's never been used.

You got a GREAT deal, hang on to it.

I won't let mine go as it was given to me by my dad as a graduation present.

What's the knife on the top shelf on the left?

I know this is an old post. I was Googling the 184 when I cam across it but to answer the last question the beast of a Knife on the top left is a Buck Intrepid. I own one. It's not quite as thick as a 184 but it's a heck of a utility knife.

As for the OP, if you have a real 184 you got for $50 I'll double your money for ya LOL. It's worth WAY more than that if it's in decent shape. WAY more.

Hey old posters are cool lol i been wanting one of these since i was a kid in 95 or so. someone sounds like their full of it when they say they passed one up for 40 dollars. typical ive been there done that to cool for that guy talkin his stuff haha.
