I am looking for a budget (sub $500) .223 semi auto. Since I live in NY and we still have a AWB, many of the AK and AR varients are off the list. I have been thinking of a new Saiga .223 or a used Mini 14. I am leaning twords the saiga since I have had such good luck with my Norinco SKS and Mak90. Any input would be appreciated.

i have heard good things about saigas, if they're legal for you. I also hear good things about mini 14's, but most say they're not super accurate, but a friend that just got one says there's enough room for double finger action,:D so you'd probably hit what you're aimin at:D

If the Saiga is legal for you, get it. I have one, they're good, and wonderful for the price. A Mini-14 won't be under $500, and is probably not any better.

If the Saiga isn't legal, I would consider the Remington 7615 - it is a pump action, but it's a .223 that uses AR type magazines, and it gets good reviews.

Definately the saiga. Sagai > Mini 14 IMHO. Also if you ever move you can then make it much more evil.

kel tec su-16 is an option supposed to be good gun gas piston system and takes ar mags if that matters...

Saigas are great rifles, though I'm not fond of the Rube Goldberg trigger as they come out of the box. You might also look for a Daewoo DR200, which is sort of like a post-ban, piston-upper AR. Takes AR mags, too, so you can use NY-legal pre-ban mags. Not many people have heard of these guns, which has kept prices down somewhat.

I havent seen a Daewoo DR200 go for $500 in a few years. They are in the $600-$800 Range. And the K1's and K2's are are $1000-$1300 price range.

Century has the C15 (AR 15) they are made on new recievers from used colt parts. I see them at gun shows for around $500.

How bad could century scew up an AR? They are the Lego's of rifles.

... and which AKs would these be?

Every US made kit AK that Century sells was contracted out to competent builders by them. None have had any negative reviews ( in fact, the Yugo AKs they sell are raved about ).

People PLEASE quit saying the WASRs are made by Century - they're not.

They're made by underpaid Romanians in Romania out of military-rejected parts.

Century only adds compliance parts to the WASR.

Someone needs to make a bot for this board that automatically answers "Saiga" when this kind of question is asked. It would save us a lot of work :D

But yeah, get the Saiga and don't look back.
