Budget 308 help

I'm going to throw in the call to get a Marlin. They only make one centerfire, so they are not economizing their flagship to get in the economy market. I have three, all are sub-moa shooters. For barrel length, a 22" will be just fine on a 308, if want a longer barrel, then do a heavy barrel. Ruger Hawkeye's are also very nice rifles, but they'll put you up in another price range.

What's the diff between the 11-111 trophy hunter and the 16/116 trophy hunter aside from one being stainless

Is the Nikon scope that comes on these decent or should I get the gun and scope seperately? Is the. 3-9 adequate for shooting out to 500-800 yards?

The Nikon is a decent scope, good in fact, but depending on the size of your target you might want more then a 9 power for 800 yards though military snipers regularly use a fixed 10 power out to 800yd on the M24. Any Savage should give you good service, but the heavier barrel models will be better for long range shooting, though all heavy barrel rifles SUCK stalking in the woods come hunting season. Nothing like crawling through the dense under brush with a 4 foot long 10 lbs rifle slung over your shoulder snagging every fracking tree branch and vine in the woods :(

Savage has so many rifles out now I couldn’t even start to tell you much of anything about them. In the past, the additional digit meant it was a long action. 10 is short action, 110 is long action. I don't know what the difference is between 10's, 11's, 16's.

There's a site, I think it's SavageShooter.com and those folks are really into Savage rifles.

Be happy to sell you an Ishapore 2A for $300 ;)

But if you want new, I'd look for an Marlin XS7, especially if you can find a pre Remlin rifle. Very nice rifles that I found I liked better than the Savages; nothing objective, they just fit me better.

Savage is over rated. The TC Venture is proving to be more accurate, has a much better stock, much better trigger, comes with scope bases, 60 degree bolt lift, quality detachable magazines and with 5R rifiling. Savage used to be the king of the budget rifles, but TC has outdone them.

I question the shooting ability of anyone that says Savages don't shoot straight, after half a dozen of them I cannot formulate a single complaint about any of them other then they are not as pretty as my Winchester 70, and Savages are all picky about what they like to shoot. Mine don't like most soft points except Core-lokts and Serria Game Kings, which I happily feed them. Not knocking the TC I am sure it is a fine performer too, but I am a very good shooter and I cannot out shoot my Savages even with their hunting loads.
