Cheap .308 ammo

308 chambers are rated for higher pressures? You lost me. You mean every 308 rifle ever built is "rated" for higher pressure than any 7.62 chamber?

This debate goes on and on and on and on... But I look at the dimensions of 7.62x51 and 308 Winchester and they are virtually the same. I have owned several rifles stamped 308 and they all shot military 7.62 without any detectible difference. My one rifle stamped 7.62 digests commercial 308 with equal indifference. I have heard military ammo uses slightly thicker brass to withstand being slammed through full-auto guns. I have heard military ammo has a slightly different shoulder for the same reason. I dunno... My guns don't care which ammo I use.

If there is any difference between 7.62 and 308 I can't see it.
While the 7.62mm NATO cartridge has a maximum chamber pressure of approximately 50,000 psi, in the SAAMI book the .308 Winchester has a MAP (maximum average product) pressure of approximately 62,000 psi. This is not to say that all .308 Winchester loads will develop such pressures, merely that they would be within manufacturing tolerances if they did so. Firing .308 Winchester ammunition in a firearm specifically chambered for the 7.62mm NATO risks damage to the firearm and injury to the shooter.

Just bought a savage rifle in .308 am looking for recommendations on low cost factory ammo. I use wolf in my AR and it works great but not sure if they make .308 ammo or if it's good enough for the .308. I am looking for a target load to use from 100-400 yards. So what is a option that should shoot well but not cost a fortune? How much are we taking per round?
I agree with allaroundhunter's post #4. If you have a new bolt gun and want to see how it actually delivers at distances out to 400 yards I would at least run a box of good consistent well manufactured ammunition through it. Federal Gold in .308 using Sierra 168 grain match king bullets is a good start. Running cheap military surplus or just plain garbage ammunition through the rifle won't tell you much of anything.

Down the road if you want good stuff for ammunition, think about rolling your own.

This is the best deal I could find on ammo you could use for both hunting and plinking. Brown Bear 240 rds. .308 140 - gr. SP Ammo $104.97 for non members of the Sportsmans Guide. I am sure you can find it a little cheaper but SG is always fair on shipping ($10avg) and they do a great job of keeping popular ammo in stock.

I shoot 7.62 MEN ammo in my Fed. Ord. M14A an its very accurate...an cheap. Made in Germany also called DAG, just different factories. 200 rds for around 89.00.....some shooters say its more accurate than there expensive Match ammo. I've been shooting mine out to 740yds with hits on a small gong.

NATO and SAAMI use different methods and NATO uses the term "psi" when it is measured by a different method which does not yield 1:1 comparison to SAAMI's transducer method.

Anyway...just read a vendor ad selling Wolf 7.62x39 from Ukraine, not sure who that is exactly. I have not gotten their 308 in a while so not sure which manufacturer. Somebody should get some and report what "Made in..." is on the box.

As Reloadron said, Federal Gold Medal Match is the standard to measure against. That does not mean it is the best in all cases, but at about a $1/rd, does not hurt to try.

7.62x39 is not the same as 7.62x51(.308 Win)......

I search the internet for good deals on surplus ammo. I find it shoots just fine. Sometimes it's on those damn links, which takes some time to free them, but I like the price and results. I even deer hunt with them, and it seems to do the job at half the price. I've got some early 80's .308 from United Arab Emigrates, and my Savage bolt seems to love them, and so does my LAR-8.
