I'm planning to load both my Taurus 605 and my SP 101 with the Buffalo Bore 158 grain LSWCHP +P stuff. Thanks for your comments and for sharing your personal experiences with this load/combination.

Thanks!

Well, the Buffalo Bore did not do any worse than the Winchester 145 grain STHP (.357 magnum) round in the SP 101 - and both I found to be very accurate. In the Taurus 605...well, that's another story...but NOT a bad one!

I shot two boxes of through each of these weapons - 4 boxes total.

I thought my 605 was fine up through Hornady 145 grainers. 158 Magnums weren't a lot of fun, and 170 grain handloads were painful. All it will ever see from here on is 38s and self defense ammo which will probably/hopefully get turned over due to age thru my Blackhawk..

.38 special

Yes, it is the .38 special round, and the ruger SP 101 does handle it very well indeed.

How hard does the Winchester 145 grain .357 Silvertip load kick in the SP-101? Whch barrel length do you have?

Thanks,

Lone Star

The 3" version.

I have the 3"-barrel version, Lone Star. And I find that it handles the Winchester 145 grain STHP .357 magnum rounds well enough for me to shoot as many rounds I like to at a given range session. Cost of the rounds is more of a limiting factor, though.

I find it much more comfortable to shoot the SP 101-Winchester STHP than to shoot my S&W 342 AirLite PD with the Speer Gold Dot 135 grain +P .38 rounds; in fact, "comfortable" is not a word I'd use to describe my experience with that little "mule".

Thanks. I wouldn't fire more than a couple or three cylinders at one session, with .357 ammo. Haven't fired my SP-101 yet, hopefully next week. Figured that it'd kick pretty bad with magnum ammo.

I once owned a S&W M-19 snub, and that was as small a gun as I've used in .357. With service round--butt stocks, it'd literally leave the imprint of the checkering in my palm for awhile after a range session. The Ruger grip is probably better designed to handle heavy recoil.

I'm sure you'd

...enjoy shooting the SP 101, Lone Star. I've not found it necessary to change the stock grips.

I've found shooting the Remington Golden Saber magnum rounds (GS357MA) in my snub revolvers - including my SP 101 - to be pleasant.

I hope you enjoy your gun.

Best

To me, the SP101 doesn't kick nearly as badly as people have claimed them to.

I can run as much remington UMC full loads through it as I want, and the 147 silvertips have less harsh of a recoil.

Just use a good, soild grip and you'll be fine.

It took a little practice, but I got to the point where I can one hand 158 grain loads that clocked right at 1500 FPS out of a 6" barrel. I won't do more than a couple cylinders like that, but they aren't horrible.
