Bugging out..what can you carry out?

If you don't have to physically carry them, then MREs are fine. The Army chose MREs because they require no additional water -- forgetting what we Infantrymen always knew, that the water was IN the MREs and we had to carry it anyway.

If you plan to go by truck, you can carry a truckload of food, equipment and supplies. But if anyone who plans to go afoot should do a trial run with their proposed bug-out kit and see how it works out.

Yeah, when rifle armed enemies are everywhere,

you are going to just slop along like a Boy scout, and you'll get shot the first day of shtf. I"m doing my water-replenishment at night, and I want at least a full day's supply. I've had many a day when a gallon of water wasn't nearly enough and nobody was chasing me or trying to shoot me.

Bug In

When I was single & my son was but a fond notion, bugging out was a lot more viable.

In the service, I was a ruck-marching monster. I didn't do the run particularly fast, but I could haul lots of gear a long ways. I'm not in that good a shape, though, nowadays.

Here in DFW the serious situations requiring bugging in or out are:
1. Tornado
2. Nuke & nuke fallout
3. Civil unrest

That's about it.

Tornado:
No bugging out. It hits & is gone. Pick up the pieces

Nuke:
Not sure here, but likely bug in.

Civil Unrest:
If it is Rodney King-type rioting, I doubt they'd make it too far out of the 'hood. Getting to Richardson is unlikely, at best.

My neighbor behind me is trustworty & a VN vet/former POW. He gets his pick of my gun collection, after the wife & I have chosen. We already cover each other's homes when the other is gone.

I also know a wascaly wabbit one street north who can bring his own rifles to the party.

*********

If absolutely forced to bug out, I have some buddies in Arkansas with some land in BFE. Pack up the Honda Uglyment & go.

Heh, I have the advantage of a custom vehicle almost built for this kinda thing.

it's a 1994 tomos sprint moped converted to a trike with a pryer rear end, which i happen to be a master at repairing, and will run on prettymuch anything that the spark plug will ignite with a mere change of jetting.
(a 3 minute process, at most)

Spare parts run about 8-10lbs of kit, tools another 10-12lbs.
MRE's because cost/weight/space requirements.
Water in a cloth-type carrybag like the swiss use.
5 Gallons of fuel (at 212mpg, in addition to the 1.2 tank on it..that's a lot)
1 Quart of 2stroke oil (although any oil will do, even 10w30/10w40)
3 spark plugs.
Tent, bedroll, spare socks, the "standard" kit most folks go backpacking with.
Set of decent maps, binocs, common sense stuff.
Tool knife, combat knife, hunting knife
(some crossover, but a good knife is worth having!)
Probably a small shortbarrel 12Gauge and a decent revolver if they're handy, but my weapon of choice is actually a small crossbow with string silencers, since one can make 'ammo' in a pinch, and it's a hell of a lot quieter than a pistol.

My only real concern would be fuel supply, but without the alphabet boys screaming about it, i'm sure grain alcohol would be a little more available than it is now, and while it would increase maintainence due to the fact that it'll pit the aluminum parts if you don't clean and lubricate more regularly, this little beastie would indeed run on it.
