Build a AR?

You might want to move your rear sight back as far as you can. Peeps work a little better when closer to your eye. Then again, based on my shooting today, you probably shouldn’t listen to me.
You right. Maybe I should move it back.
"Probably shouldn't listen to me"? You right again. No one should listen to anyone but me.

If nothing else, moving it back to the last notch on the pic rail won’t change anything as far as using the flip up sights. However it does leave more room for optics later.
I'm not real interested in adding optics right now. Maybe later. More of a iron sight guy. Always have been. Not saying anything wrong with optics.
I would think that moving the rear sight as far back from front sight could help improve accuracy, more or less. Just me.

Use quality parts & tools. You will be glad you did. Will cost more then the cheapest factory rifle, but if you are not in a race to the bottem, you can build a very high quality rifle less expensively then top end guns. That's where it's worth it. Get the best barrel you can find.

I think I must have stepped off the path or something. Cause suddenly, I got lost?
In reference to my comment above, it is related to your dislike of the charging handle. I get it you are not use to it. I suggested two alternatives that, in my opinion, could make you "like" the design.

A third alternative is the side charging handle, a la BCA, but that's basically changing the upper.

Have you considered a carry handle sight for a classic option?

The further apart the sights are, the less minor errors in sight alignment matter. One or two notches on a pic rail won’t matter. Going from a barrel mounted notch sight on a 30-30 to a receiver peep sight is quite a difference.

A longer sight radius is always preferable so long as you can see the front sight. Charging handles are a personal preference (Phase 5 for me), but I did learn on the milspec style.

My father taught me to manipulate the charging handle and bolt catch with my left palm while controlling the rifle via the pistol grip with my right hand. He was a lefty but still did things as he was taught.

Edited to add that the last picture is my son’s rifle with a Radian Raptor, the others are Phase 5.

16” and 10.5” barrels, same sight radius.

This is where an extended CH really shines.

I do sight radius by barrel length or what can fit on the handguard of 16" barrels and longer only. I do a 75-80% of length of barrel between sights total, not just on handguards.

16" = 12-12.8"
20" = 15- 16"
24" = 18- 19.2"

I haven't seen any difference on full distance compared to my settings. It works for me as ymmv.2
