Maybe kinda of a dumb question, but to build an AR do I just need the lower assembly and upper assembly? Are there other parts I'll need to order too (other than several magazines?) When my C&R gets here I might use the dealer price discount to build one from Midway.

You could buy a stripped lower receiver and then buy a rifle kit from places such as AR15sales.com or Del-ton.com. The rifle kit will have an assembled upper receiver, a LPK (Lower Parts Kit), and a stock. You have to build up the stripped lower, but that's not hard to do. I built mine with zero experience. Once the lower is assembled, just slap the upper and lower together and you're done! If you don't want to build the lower, then you could buy an assembled lower w/o stock, or a fully assembled lower including the stock. Lots of options. :)

You need a complete upper and a complete lower. If you get that, all you need to do is stick 'em together. If you get a stripped lower, you'll need a Lower Parts Kit (LPK) and a stock. Depending on the upper, you may need to get sights as well.

Sweet, my wife just came in and saw me looking at one and gave me a dirty look, so I called her a gun-grabbing Democrat. I'm planning to get a .22LR upper as well probably from Ciener.

I'm still debating on building an AR vs buying a Mini-14. Ciener has .22LR kits for both.

I would suspect that you will be happier with an AR.

Doing a complete kit, with a stripped lower is not that difficult. If you get the AGI videos for AR15, you will have the info that you need to assemble.

As stated in another post, you can get complete lowers and uppers to just pin together, and you are done.

Be sure that you are getting the bolt, bolt carrier and charging handle with your upper, some are sold without them.

Good luck

To echo what the others said, make sure the upper comes with the bolt and charging handle. Some "Complete" uppers do not.

Check out the following links:

http://www.brianlane.com/articles/ar15/ This is the "How To" site for building AR 15's. Not only how to but what tools you need and what order things go together but hints to make it easier too.

http://www.essentialarms.com/ This company has the least expensive lower receivers that I have found.

http://www.rangersales.com/index.php?main_page=index This site has every thing else that you will need, check the complete rifle kits which are indeed "complete".

For tooling, you can get whatever you need form Brownells or Midway.
