Just curious, What do I need to purchase in order to build a fully operational AR-15 ? Is it simply an Upper and Lower assembly ? Or is it more involved than that? I found a non stripped lower on GunBroker.com and an Upper as well Is that all I need? Thanks

As long as they are complete lowers and uppers, yes, that is all you need. Of course, that's not really building. That is just assembling, but there is nothing wrong with that if you are happy with the results:D

You can build a lower in less than an hour. When you have already done it once, your next one will take 20-30 min.

Go to Brownells.com and order their free AR catalog, all kinds of stuff you never knew you needed until you saw it there. Right now the best deals on uppers seem to be from Bravo Company.

Good reading even if your not into building Ar's.

But yes, once you know what parts you'll need, and what parts the uppers and lowers include, you can get a complete upper and a complete lower, then just snap them together.

I recommend a LMT complete lower and a BCM complete upper with BCM bolt carrier group.

Don't forget to get an ambi safety.

The stripped lower receiver is the registered part, ie "the gun." All other parts, including a complete upper receiver, can be shipped directly to your house. It is not hard to build a completed lower receiver from a stripped lower reciever, there are good instructions online, such as the AR15.com website. You will need some simple tools, especially some punches which won't mar the finish such as brass, maybe some needle nose pliers and a little tac hammer. Building a complete upper receiver is possible also, I'm told requires some more specialized tools, esp. to check for proper headspacing. I'd buy the complete upper and assemble or buy the complete lower and just snap them together for your new AR-15. Think about what you will use your gun for prior to assembly. If you plan a lot of target shooting or varminting, consider a 2 stage match trigger like the one sold by Rock River Arms. They sell this trigger in a kit with all the other lower parts you will need, bye the way. For a carbine, I like the Magpul CTR stock over the standard inexpensive 6 position stock. I'd go with milspec buffer tube over commercial as it increases your options significantly. Remember, you can buy another upper receiver and just slap it on your lower, so think over what you want in your lower before you build. Make sure to safety function test the lower after building to make sure the safety works and don't pull the trigger and drop the hammer all the way unimpeded without the upper attached.

The lower receiver isn't "registered" but it is the part that the atf cares about. Don't forget to make sure the complete upper you are buying comes with a bolt carrier goup and charging handle. Some don't ie. BCM.

It's worth building one just for the experience. I did it back in the 90's. Any future AR needs will be filled by purchasing pre-assembled uppers and/or lowers. It wasn't terribly difficult, but I also don't feel the urge to do it again.
