I'd like to build a gun that's above all, tough & reliable. The kind of 'one gun' you'd trust your life to in any situation.

Priorities are therefore:
1) Tough and Reliable.
2) Then accurate.
3) Then lightweight.

Those are the priorities.

Modern weapon design dictates a composite stock, and I'd like to use an ACOG as the optic.

So, what's the best set of parts I can put under there that will always go 'bang' no matter how hard I abuse it all? (what reciver, barrel, bolt/rod/etc? What mount? Sling? Everything else.)

Were you looking for a "fantasy gun," wherein no part of it really exists (yet) but could be readily manufactured? Are you going to be using existing parts from different rifles and throwing it together in a sort of "Frankengun"? Or are you looking to modify a specific gun with readily available parts and accessories?

What type of action? Bolt? Semi?

A little clarification...

I am looking to (for instance, dosen't have to be a Springfield.) Get a Springfield M1a and then do everything I need to do to it to make it a 100% reliable gun, with a good rail-mount that will actually take some abuse.

And then mount an ACOG on it.

I don't want any National Match chambers (that could affect reliability) or Heavy Barrels (that make it too heavy to move around with.) Stuff like unitize the gas cylinder (to gain accuracy at no fault of reliability), and maybe a trigger job though, are desired.

Eg:

1) Springfield or Fulton Armory M1a/M14-type reciver (rear lugged or not? Should I go forged, billet, or cast?)
2) Fulton Armory GI parts (chrome bbl, bolt, op-rod etc.)
3) Fulton Armory composite stock,
4) rubber recoil pad, don't need the weight of metal.
5) shorten barrel to 18"
6) CA legal brake or bare muzzle.
7) KAC scope mount (?? any good? what is in use now? Which one is best?)
8) thumb-twist ACOG mount for rail-equiped guns.
9) the ACOG.
10) Sling.
11) Soft Case that's a perfect fit with mag pouches for my old GI 20 rounders.

SR-25 would be my first choice. But, like artherd I'm in the freedom loving People's Paradise of California so it'll have to be a M-14 type action. Heck, I wanna gun like the snipers used in Blackhawk Down.

Buy a Springfield M1A SOCOM (16" barrel) and add a ACOG. You're ready to go...it's milspec as is I think.

I thought none of the Springfields were (even close to) milspec. Ie, cast reciver, bolt, etc. I also don't think the forward-scope mount of both the Scout and the SOCOM would work well with the ACOG.

Zak- Now we're talking. Does the West Texas Ordnance makes the M14/M1Garand hybrid rifles, right? Is that really a good idea? Can the Garang gas system handle a variety of loads? I confess ignorance on this kind of hybrid rifle.

lrb

in terms of receivers, there are a few guys near me called LRB sales. they do most of the transfers for us NY guys over at ar15.com. They have an ad in shotgun news too. they craft their own m14 receivers. their shop has a coupole in various states of completion and let me tell you what they make from an eight pound brick of metal is beautiful. top-of-the-line material. next year they are releasing complete m14's. email me for more info if you're interested. these people are honest guys, so if you wanna ask them questions, they'd probably be cool with that.

I was going to have Clayton at West Texas Ordinance build me an M1A from an LRB receiver.....I did not know LRB was going to do complete rifles. I'm intriqued......any more info chapperjoe? Their shop is about a 45 minute drive for me.

hey LIer

I myself am more into AKs and ARs but they do transfers for us LI guys. You should check out the NY hometown page on ar15.com.

Real charachters those two. Anyhow, i see on their website that they are making a new reciever with rails forged WITH the reciever. . . e.g. not added on. they are made form the same 8 pound pice of metal. Allows use of irons sights and all. REAL tight tolerances, etc.

Anyhow, while i was there last week, they mentioned the possibility of complete rifles next year. its worth checking into.

I'll tell you this much, the second i can afford an m14, its gonna be theirs!

Very cool. I'll give them a ring....I love that reciever with the built in mounts.

Didn't know arfcom had an NY board.....I'll check that out too. Thanks.

They're supposed to be available around the end of this year. If you're interested you might want to call Lou now and get your name on the list, because the wait is already long enough for his standard receivers.

Your definition describes the M-1 Carbine to a tee. Put a plastic stock, with or without a pistol grip, on if you want, but it won't make a difference. No optics required. No surplus ball ammo either. 110 grain HP handloads only. 5, 10, 15 or 30 round mags are readily and inexpensively available.
If it came to pass that somebody said pick one of your rifles and go fight, my carbine would be it. Despite the fact that I have a Garand, the M-14, the 03A4 and a couple Enfields.
