Ok so I'm thinking for my next gun I wanna build a 1911 from scratch. I don't want to build a super race gun or anything match accurate. I just want to learn the intricacies of the gun. So where's a good place to get somewhat decent but not great parts?

There is a lot more to "building" a 1911 style pistol then buying some parts and puting them together.

If you are determined to proceed start by going to: www.gunbooks.com and buy a copy of Jerry Kuhnhausen's book." The Colt .45 Automatic- A Shop Manual." There are two, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. It wouldn't hurt to have both, but in any case get a copy of Vol. 1. These will at least give you some idea about what needs to be done and how to go about it..

Next, go to www.brownells.com and order a copy of their catalog. It contains most if not all of the specialized tools, jigs, gages and fixtures you will need as well as a wide range of parts from different suppliers.

Unless you have an experienced "old hand" to help guide you through this I would STRONGLY suggest that you buy one of the better quality Mil-Spec guns and rebuild it rather then buying different parts from here or there. This forum is litterally filled with threads posted by people that are having problems pecause their particular gun is suffering from mis-fitting or low quality parts. Quality parts are usually expensive. Cheaper parts will cost you more in the long run.

Don't know where to get parts, but I think that your project will be very self-satisfying....I wish you the best luck!!!
