Building a 1928A Thompson

Okay, so I bought this kit for an original 1928A and I then bought a dummy receiver, and the more I look at it, the only dummy I see is me!

I can't believe what I have spent on this pretty paper weight.

So I am wondering, can I buy and use a semi-auto receiver from Auto-Ord, after I get my Form 4 back from the ATF to build an SBR? Will it work/fit? I figure I will have to invest in the propper semi-auto parts as well, but which parts? Is it even compatable? Will AO sell a receiver to my FFL as a part or even as a gun, but with the receiver only?

Looking for some good advice please.

Cheaper/easier:
-Sell the parts kit
-Buy the Semi Thompson
-Do the paperwork to make it a SBR
-Have it cut off and engraved after you have the ATF's OK.

I thought about that very thing afte I tallied up what i have already spent. It is my plan B so to speak. I would like to have the original pre-WWII kit if at all possible though.

If it's a no-go with AO, then that's what I plan on doing.

Nomad, 2nd is right. Converting a full auto Thompson parts kit into a functional, reliable, semi auto is a very difficult task.

Kahr Arms is currently selling an SBR 1927 and an SBR M1, both look very pretty. They don't come cheap though. Take a look at their website to see some pictures.

I am not an instructor... I have been kinda befriended by some of the guys there and am kinda a 'hanger on' at times...

I have taken their Instructor class, but do not believe I am ready to teach...

The problem with using the parts kits is that you will have to buy MANY semi parts... and then pay a gunsmith to 'convert the parts kit' to semi (The ATF has regs on this that I've gone through with a 1919... skip it believe me.)

There are only a few items ya can even use from your parts set to build a Semi auto, the furniture and the FCG the barrel if ya SBR it...... We have 4300 M1, M1A and 1928 as new parts sets, They are all being built as Dummy guns for military vehicles etc...

If ya want a Semi Auto Tommy, your far ahead to buy a Auto Ordinance one, even IF ya can get a manufacturer to let go of a Semi reciever its going to run ya at least $400 by itself now add that to the $750 ya have into the parts set already, now ya will also need the semi auto fire from closed bolt bolt thats gonna run ya another $280 next ya are going to needa modify your FCG or send it out we do the mods for $150 so now ya can get an already Semi auto for $750 from Auto Ordinance or ya can spend $1380 to get to the same place...... oh and I forgot either add $200 for the SBR tax stamp on the under 16" barrel or add in $185 for a legal 16" replacement barrel and the only original parts ya get to legally keep are the furniture and FCG............


And the $400 reciever price was the dealer price I was quoted IF we buy 10 or more recievers.........
