I can only afford the semi auto versions, but are the guns worth more if they are built with real original tommy gun parts on a semi receiver(plus closed bolt and associated hardware) or are they still about the same as the repos? Auto Ordinance sells a semi receiver for $470 and there are authentic 1928 tommy gun kits on gun broker for $760. Also, how hard would it be to assemble one? I would also have to get the SBR stamp if I wanted to use the original barrel, but I like the looks of the shorter barrel anyway. If this seems feasible maybe I will tackle it this summer instead of building an AR.

They are extremely difficult to build on your own without lots of tools.

That said, what you want to do can be done. There is an excellent Thompson 'smith in Colorado that builds up what you are talking about.

He is currently working up an SBR M1 version for me using old parts kits (mostly for the wood furniture) on a Kahr receiver.

It ain't cheap. The $200 Form 1 tax excluded, I'm going to be about $1600 into the thing. Doing it myself would have cost me much much more I have no doubt.

If you can possibly avoid new Auto-Ordinance parts, do so.

I had a horrendous experience with a Kahr Thompson. If you want details I will provide them but for now I would rather not think about it :cuss:
