I bought a G34 Gen4 (grey frame) to use primarily for SSP division of IDPA, and a bit of Steel Challenge. I want to mod this gun as much as I can (within reason) while staying SSP legal, not because it will make me better, but because I want to and I can. Listed below is what I have planned. Any comments or suggestions are welcome:

10-8 Performance Sights w/ 0.115" wide x 0.235" tall fiber optic front, and 0.140" wide u-notch rear

Vogel Competition Trigger System

Pearce frame insert

Talon Grips - granular

OEM extended mag release

Jäger steel guide rod - heavy

Wolff 15 lb recoil spring

CompTac International holster

None of that stuff, except maybe the trigger and a good holster, will help you one iota.

Best to use the money on reloading equipment and practice.

I think you missed the part where the OP said "not because it will make me better, but because I want to and I can" which implies they already know that.

I know what the OP said. He also said any comments or suggestions are welcome :).

Do the sights, trigger, and spend the rest on ammunition and range fees.

I know a Master Class USPSA shooter who shoots a Gen 4 G34 and Gen 4 G35 modified exactly the same way...Warren Tactical sights with fiber optic front, and 25 cent trigger job. Thats it. He says you will get bigger gains in performance shooting matches frequently and learning the game than you will tinkering with an already reliable gun.

Why tinker with a gun if it won't make you better?

Just my .02,

You have a very good list. The only thing you might add is a Rock Your Glock reduced power mag release spring.

Do you reload? Loading low recoil ammo helps a lot too. The recoil spring may be a bit heavy depending on what ammo you use. I run an 11 lb spring.

I added the Pearce grip plug to my old G19. I found the rounded front made it impossible to catch the edge of the case on the back edge of the mag chute, speeding up my reloads. The grip tape MAY improve your traction, keeping the gun from sliding in your grip during recoil.

Why do you assume I don't shoot matches, or buy lots of ammo, already??? Do you think any of these modifications, will make me worse? Are you implying that I wouldn't have won the club match I shot earlier today with my less modified G19, had I been shooting my new G34?

So any comments or suggestions aren't actually welcome. :)

When they're comments that are specifically requested by the OP not to be included in the discussion, I'd imagine that they aren't welcome.

I'm not a believer in using hardware to fix a software problem, but tinkering and slapping stuff together is just as valid of a hobby as going out and putting lead downrange. Most here acknowledge how much fun buying guns can be even if they don't fill a particular role or niche, why isn't the same respect given to modifications?

Why is everyone so concerned with what other people do with their own money if those people aren't being scammed out of it?

As they say: whatever floats your boat.

If they're mods that you want and don't affect reliability, then go for it.

While I dont have any experience with Vogel Triggers. (I run Vaneks in my Glocks)

It appears to be typical of aftermarket triggers. From experience, if you drop the FP spring too low, it will result in Light Strikes with or without an extended firing pin. User induced malfunctions are always fun when it counts. You will likely have to play with the spring weights for your individual gun until you stop the light strikes.

Like another poster. I also run an 11lb recoil spring w/ Heavyweight guide rod conversion on my 34.

The only thing you'd want to check is if it's legal in SSP to use a steel guide rod. I was thinking that it wasn't, but don't feel like looking it up to check. If it's legal, then go for it.

Yes, testing the parts and ammo is part of the fun. I have been running a 5lb striker spring with the factory striker in one of my G19s for a few years, and have yet to experience a light strike with any of the ammo I typically shoot. I plan to stick with the 5lb spring in the G34 as well.

This is the first time I have ever played with non-factory recoil springs and guide rods in any gun. Part of the reason for trying it on this one it is just curiosity. If it doesn't work for some reason I'll have the factory RSA in my bag to pop back in.

I run an 11lb spring on my g17 limited minor /steel gun. tracks much better for me.

I also really like the zev fulcrum trigger. I run the lightest striker spring and dont get light strikes, even with "hard" cci primers.

I use armor-all in the striker channel , feels slicker then even silicon spray.

Here is what I found in the IDPA rulebook:

8.2.1.3 SSP Permitted Modifications (Inclusive list):
8.2.1.3.4 Recoil spring guide rods and dual spring recoil systems made of material that is no heavier than stainless steel.

8.2.1.4 SSP Excluded Modifications (Non-Inclusive list):
8.2.1.4.5 Slide inserts to accommodate a different recoil assembly design.

My interpretation is the Jager captured steel guide rod is legal for SSP, because it does not require slide insert. Of course to be sure you may want to check with IDPA.

Guide rods in SSP used to be restricted to the "original material" (making steel rod illegal in a glock that comes with a plastic rod) but that has since been changed and now they are legal.

I like your list overall; mine would look very similar:

Adjustable black rear/narrowest fiber optic front on the market. Pick your brand.

Trigger... do it yourself for cheap; nothing in a Glock trigger should ever cost more than 1/5th what they charge for any of the high dollar aftermarket trigger.

Some kind of grip plug, absolutely. This will save some reloads that you would have hung up on the back of the magwell with the hole in it.

Talon Grips - I used a set, and it is the only grip tape I've ever had stay in place.

OEM extended mag release - Should be there from the factory on a G34, no mod needed.

Guide rod: Steel, non captured, your choice of brand, heavier is better.

Recoil spring - I settled on 13lbs when I was shooting striker guns.

Holster... whatever OWB kydex you like, straight drop; not FBI cant.

Some of the modifications you listed would take you out of SSP.

I have been an SSP master for years now and the only parts on my 34 that were not made by Glock are the Dawson sights, skate board grip tape, springs, a modified plug for the hole in the bottom of the grip and two set screws.

Please explain, because I have read the rules quire extensively, and as far as I can tell they are all SSP legal.
