I have one of the older Mini 14 rifles with the pencil barrel. I want a winter project so was thinking of converting it to 300 BLK.:D I know I could sell it and get an AR platform instead but making a custom rifle with a good quality barrel in this platform is something I have been mulling over for a loooong time. I do not foresee THAT many issues doing this. I could possibly even use a Mini 30 recoil spring that is modified to simplify recoil/feeding issues. I am still researching to see if the action would be strong enough. Those of you that have built them in the AR platform do you just change the barrel or are there other major things to consider? Before you say just get a MINI 30 I already own two of those as well. FWIW I do not own an AR platform yet although I have some I can use anytime and have shot up a lot of ammo with a couple different models already. Mini's just do it for me so now I want to try this.:p

I enjoy a good project as much as anyone but in this case I think I would just go to the LGS and trade for one of the new factory Minis in 300. Cost would probably be similar and you would have the advantage of a factory warranty. You would also have a gun that would be easily resellable, as opposed to a custom gun that would be more difficult to move.

I shoot only supersonic 300 BLK so if you are interested in subsonic, this may not apply.

Except for the barrel, my 300 BLK AR-15 rifles have no special parts in them. No wait, I did buy an upper that was printed with "300 Blackout" on it.:)

With the carbine buffers, I may have used one of the heavier buffers, but I've slept a bit since I assembled the rifles.

I also have built one pistol 300 BLK AR-15. I ordered it with one size gas system and the manufacturer called me and recommended a different one that would work better. Kudos to Black Hole Weaponry's customer service.

So, I'd suggest a little research on the idiosyncrasies of the 300 BLK's gas requirements.

A Mini 300 BLK sounds like a fun project.

I was previously unaware that Ruger was making one already, but I still would want a better barrel than Ruger provides I would think and threaded for a suppressor as well. The link above is interesting but part of the whole project would be the build/modify it myself aspect.:) I see more research is in order.

Do a little research on Ruger's 300, see if they use a different recoil spring rate or anything like that. If it is just a barrel swap, then it is just a function of sourcing one.
