I live in a larger city, and I'm really disappointed with the lack of good gun ranges in the area. They all happen to be costly indoor ranges and so testing out longer ranged firearms is a yawn-enducing bore. My girl and I joke about building one but to me actually sounds like a great idea. I am positive some restrictions may vary from state to state. But isn't there a mandatory 3mile distance from city limits to discharge firearms?

Distance requirements are going to vary from area to area. I think what you'll find, is that in the long run owning/operating a public range is a HUGE hassle. Not only will you have an uphill battle getting approved to build virtually anywhere within city limits most times, the upkeep & insurance necessary to run a range is enormous. Roof repairs, lighting, filtration systems, backstop maintenance....on and on and on.

All depends on where yo are. I'm not in a city but in a "town", gotta be 600 feet from a residence to shoot.

Not many new guns ranges are built...lots of permits/zoning stuff required and insurance is rediculous. Luckily, the club I belong to built their range in the 20's before any of the nearby houses. All the homeowners that came in signed an agreement saying they knew there was a range and can't do anything to close it.

As said, it's the operating costs that are the huge headache. The air system is a MAJOR financial aspect of the startup and maintanance costs. Insurance is alos a HUGE expence. Seriously...if you're actually wanting to go this route for a business, you really need expert legal advice not just talk from anonomous screen names on a intenet forum. An actual well thought out business plan would definately be in order also.

Very costly

Some associates just built a new indoor range in SLC Ut in an existing building. 25 Yards and will allow anything to be safely fired including AP .50BMG. This range is designed by Action target out of Provo Utah who build and install worldwide and some very nice set ups. With the High tech air recovery system, Just the range cost over a Million Dollars and this was in an existing building! The total of the store and range was close to 2 Million. This building is less than 150 feet from residences and 40 feet from the next building. Maintainance can be considerable and you have to dispode of the lead projectiles properly and wear protective gear while sweeping the range. Range fees are high but with associated costs, they have to be! Long-range facilities would require some serious acreage in mountain or desert area for safety and even then you read of stray bullets ending up miles away in odd places.
