I picked up a used Ruger 10/22 the other day, with scope, for $210 at my LGS. I decided a few weeks ago after buying a couple bricks of Wolf MT .22LR that I needed a gun to shoot it. What better gun, then, than the AR-15 of the .22 LR world? (I say that in terms of aftermarket support and buildability).

So, I'm likely going to stash the original barrel and stock away for a future build -- probably for an Appleseed rifle with Techsights, if I ever get around to signing up for an Appleseed shoot -- and ordered a Kidd Ultra Lightweight Fluted barrel and a Magpul Hunter X-22 stock. A match grade trigger will be installed at a future date.

My current plan is to slap my 6x fixed SWFA SS scope on the rifle initially, but I'd like to at least consider the possibility of rabbit hunting with this rifle (since the bull barrel only weighs 1.25 lbs), so I'd really like to get another Redfield 3-9x scope. I've got one on my 6.5 Grendel, so I might upgrade that scope in the future.

Who else here has custom 10/22s? Feel free to show 'em off, I wanna see what my competition is! ;)

Trigger, barrel, then stock....you will be suprised what a good trigger will do

Second what kBob said!

Be careful, rimfirecentral will not be cheap. The ultimate 10/22's over there are impressive.

Are you interested in actually building a 10-22, or are you interested in just swapping parts out on the one you have?? I ask because there is a big difference, like with an AR (very few actually build an AR, most just assemble them).

If the former, there are sites with receivers you can finish and actually build a rifle.

Otherwise if you just want to swap parts, there are other sites that sell some good stuff to do that.

.

You can go crazy on a 10/22 build OR buy a 10/22 LVT and drop in a better trigger and you're good to go.
I just picked up a Stainless 20" deluxe for the wife and dropped it into a Boyd's Pro Varmint with adjustable cheek piece. I'll post a pick when I'm on my home 'puter.

My plan is to eventually get a Kidd or comparable receiver and bolt, but for just a bit more than the price of a match receiver I got a complete rifle that I can either keep the parts off for future use or sell on eBay. For now the parts are staying with me.

I also don't fool with 80% receivers. I like the idea, but I don't think I have the patience to do it justice. However, it does seem like the 10/22 receivers are a bit easier than 80% AR receivers. But, for the price of an 80% 10/22 receiver with jigs and bits, I can buy a receiver that I know is made correctly. I don't care about having an untraceable receiver...

I looked into the LVT, but accuracy reports for the barrel, while better than the standard sporter barrels, are not as good as Kidd, Green Mountain, etc. I figured that for a comparable price I can get as good a shooting rifle, if not better, than something stock. Plus, I like to tinker!

It does wear a Volq hammer and Kidd buffer. Prev owner bough it new and left it stock.
Shot it a lot, and trigger still sucked LOL.

Not a custom, just two aftermarket parts.
But............you don't see too many factory checkered sporters out and about.

I've been threatening to do one with a walnut sporter stock and 22" "Walmart special" barrel.

I built this one as an LTR/long range rig. Started with a Nodak receiver and 21.5" Clark midweight barrel. It has a KID two stage trigger, accurized bolt, Superior Concepts bolt handle, Nodak/Marbles/Tech Sights iron sights and a Boyd's stock.

Setup for long range use with a Bushnell Elite 10x.

I built this one for those midnight marauders that were getting into my chickens and various other nocturnal critters. Have taken 17 skunks in the last 6 months and 6 armadillos just the other night.

Just a basic takedown with Nodak/Tech Sights and it also now wears a micro red dot.

Primalmu,

Urban Rifle Supply used to make a repro stock of that type.
Wish they still did.
Would like a stainless version.

Think the Ruger 50th should have been a stainless with black synth copy of that stock.

But they didn't.

Last factory checkered sporter I saw..........a month or so on GB, went for over 1100. Nothing on it, no box or papers and not mint.

Crazy.

It's really easy to get carried away modding a 10/22. I've owned a basic, laminated-stock 10/22 carbine for several years. I initially added a Volquartsen hammer, bolt release, and buffer, along with a fixed 4X scope. It stayed that way a long time, and I guess I got bored with it since it mostly stayed in the safe. A couple years ago, I added a Kidd bolt handle. Then, just a few months ago, I ran across a Butler Creek 10/22 folding stock, which is something that has interested me for a while. I bought it, and a month later my 10/22 has been totally transformed. The folding stock cried out for a shorter barrel, so I bought a 16-inch threaded barrel without sights. The scope was soon swapped out for a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot, and then an XM177 slip-over flash hider found its way onto the barrel threads. A GI sling and some BX mags complete the look, and it's a total blast at the range! Later I'll have to post some before and after pics. Oddly, all this new activity with my 10/22 has made me miss having a traditionally stocked .22, so now I'm looking at getting one of the Ruger LVT 10/22s. :)

just don't ...

... go crazy and build a $900 rifle around $180 one that was on sale :)
as one of members said here before :
"hold on! mine never topped $750, maybe $800 "
lol

Well, the barrel arrived much quicker than I anticipated. Here's the rifle as it stands right now. With the Kidd lightweight bull barrel it is weighing in at just under 6 lbs unloaded. Pretty good I think! I anticipate the weight will get bumped a bit over 6 lbs once I get an aftermarket trigger group installed.

And don't worry, I'll post better photos once it is completely finished.

I wouldn't call my a build but I think it's the perfect setup for me as a walk around groundhog/ squirrel gun. The gun started out as my first gun when I was 12 years old with the carbine stock. As I grew the stock became a little small so I switched it out for a Mannlicher stock and added a old old weaver 400 scope.

Funny, I did the same. Put a Butler Creek bull barrel and a Choate bedded and free floated stock on it, along with a Volquartsen hammer. With a cheap 16x scope it terrorized golf balls at 100 yards with few misses.

And then I put the original stock and barrel back on and built it into an Appleseed rifle with Tech-sights. The only thing I kept on the rifle was the hammer.

I don't have a picture handy, but I put that ULW kidd barrel on mine, dropped it in the hard nylon hogue stock, put a leupold rimfire scope on it, added a deadair mask suppressor and some subsonic ammo. Miles of Smiles. That kidd barrel is crazy accurate.

as a side note, I worked my factory trigger over. I did the JB weld trick off rimfirecentral to eliminate pretravel, took down the hammer notch with a belt sander and fine sandpaper, and put a set screw in the rear of the trigger guard to eliminate overtravel. it's about a 1.5 crisp trigger now, with about 12 cents in parts and about an hour of labor. if you are looking at buying a new trigger anyway, you risk nothing by giving it a go. You might like it.
