Well, due to my recent upgrade of my current AK and the addictions it brought on, I want another one..

but I don't want to buy the whole thing, I want to do it myself. My questions are - What all tools are necessary for the complete assembly of an AK from an 80% reciever? Price not a significant issue. I'd go for pre-drilled flats but I don't have a hydraulic press or the jig, so that gets pretty pricey pretty quick for something I'd have little or no use for ever again.

Also, I'm pretty sure I'm correct in thinking I would not be able to sell anything I made.. but, if I took bits and pieces of the assembly to other places and used their tools for the work, would that make anything different?

Blackhawk ol buddy.. Have I mentioned how much I love you?

I never visit arfcom, but the first thing I noticed was easy rivet removal! You provided an answer for a question I didn't ask you, but I've been trying to figure out forever!

thanks man!

There was a Shotgun News Treasury over at the shop that had an article in which the writer assembled two AK type firearms using a big hammer, a handmade rivit setter, some glue and spray paint.

I am not saying this to be funny, it is a genuine article and I think the issue came out in December.

I would offer more but I don't go back in the shop until Tuesday.

and from what I've read, if you build it on a 100% reciever you can later sell it.
I like what I'm getting myself into =)

'nuff said.

you have to do the work. but it can be made easy if you dont mind doing a screw build. basicly you will need a parts kit, 922 parts, a grinder ( for taking off the old rivits) a drill press to drill the reciever, a dremel for fitting work, and a BATFE form.

you dont need a press to do a basic build ( pressing in and out the barrel) you can use an Automotive puller to pess out the barrel and a thing called the "all thread" method to press the barrel back in. Barrel pins MAY need a press to get out... anyway. long story short. theres a guy on AKfiles that you can hire to do almost ANYTHING for your AK project,( press in and out barrels, drill out trunion, grind rivits check the "marketplace") except work on the reciever. that only you can do

Added: Supposedly you CAN sell it afterwards how ever it must get a # engraved. but dont even THINK about making a business out of it. i have no more info than speculation

well, if your gunna make it, might as well make it a SBR

sorry, that was a force of habbit for me, i want to make an SBR

am I correct in thinking when DIYing NFA stuff it'd only cost 200$?

assuming you did ALL of it yourself?

i havnt focused too much on it yet as i want to make a functioning rifle before i shell out the 200$. (make sure i know how to do it, before i commit myslef too deep.)

(A6) Does the GCA prohibit anyone from making a handgun, shotgun or rifle? [Back]

With certain exceptions a firearm may be made by a non-licensee provided it is not for sale and the maker is not prohibited from possessing firearms. However, a person is prohibited from assembling a non-sporting semi-automatic rifle or non-sporting shotgun from imported parts. In addition, the making of an NFA firearm requires a tax payment and approval by ATF. An application to make a machine gun will not be approved unless documentation is submitted showing that the firearm is being made for a Federal or State agency.

(M16) How does an individual obtain authorization to make an NFA firearm? [Back]

Prior to making a firearm, the individual must submit ATF Form 1, Application to Make and Register a Firearm, to the Bureau of ATF, NFA Branch, and receive approval. The applicant must follow the procedures described in Question M15 concerning photographs, fingerprints and certifications. The applicant must forward the original and a duplicate of the form along with a check or money order for $200 made payable to the Bureau of ATF. If the application is approved, the original of the form with the cancelled stamp affixed showing approval will be returned to the applicant. If the application is denied, the tax will be refunded.

Applications to make a firearm will not be approved if Federal, State, or local law prohibits possession of the firearm.

while i plan to get an BATFE letter before i even put in the application, and long before i build the rifle. it all looks good to go. just remember to check local laws. and no automatics

haha romy g's i gotta get a couple sets before prices start to climb. i donno anyplace to get true 74U's but you can get 7.62 krinks all over the place ( if you want to spend the 400) please tell me that your gunna go the SBR route, cause the fake cans just dont look right on those little guns.

also
some of the romy kits have very tough to push out barrel pins. so you may be a lucky one and get it out with a drift punch, or you may need some help.

iv got time to plan my build, cant build it till summer for both time ( at college right now) and legal ( not 21 yet, cant own a hicap rifle in MA) reasons. i know for a fact though. once i start, i wont be able to stop. im already looking at sten kits
