I have been wanting to try building an AK from a parts kit on an 80% reciever for some time now. I recently came by a good deal on a brand new polish underfolder. The problem is it ships out with full auto parts. It is the complete rifle minus reciever. What would I need to do for a legal build? I know I need 5 U.S made parts to be legal. I plan to use the standard gas piston, pistol grip, and trigger set (= 3 compliant parts). But my concern is I will over look something in my build that may not be legal. Anything I need to know about such as switching bolt carriers, etc to keep it legal?

Make sure that none of the full-auto parts are included in your build. This includes sear, 3-position safety, etc. Also make sure that your receiver is not able to accommodate such parts. That should be sufficient.

When I do a "build" that has full-auto left-overs, I do what I can to make those parts go away. It's tough with AKs, there just isn't any demand in the NFA world for FA AK parts. With Uzis and Sterlings (a couple of my projects) it's easy to sell off or give away bits and pieces.

I just don't like the idea of some over-zealous jack boot type claiming I've got "constructive possession". With some guns I've built it's no big deal, like my M1919A4 and MG42. The full-auto parts end up being completely rebuilt. But with others, like your AK, you've got left-overs. With my Sterling builds it was easy to sell the bolts and trigger packs.

Sure maybe I'm paranoid.

Yes but I guess my question was what parts in the AK build would be consdered FA parts. Those are what I want to discard. Dont feel bad keith I am as paranoid as you. The FA parts will go in the garbage as soon as the kit comes in.

Can I ask where you found a good deal on the Polish underfolder kits, and what the price was? :)

Interested in those, myself.

In addition to Ar15.com, Gunco.net has a good "Build-it Yourself" section.

Make sure you check those out if you havn't already.
