I have some scratch coming my way and want to build an AR. I have a Bushmaster XM15 already that closely resembles what I carried in the Corps.

But I want something now with a tactical rail so that I can put a scope on it. And i want a collapsible stock. I know virtually nothing about where to start and what to buy and what a fair price is and whew!

So,... what is the ballpark price I could spend to get a decent (but not nat'l Match quality) Ar style rifle? And any advice from you experts?

Thanks!

$700-750 will get you a nice AR.

$485 for a complete Stag A3 upper w/ARMs backup sight.

$225 for a complete lower or you could buy a stripped lower and put it together yourself for $180ish.

Is there any advantage to building the AR over just buying one? I bought my Bushmaster and am happy with it but I always hear about people building their AR's and I'm curious now. Does building it save you money or does it only give you options for the appearance and the performance?

You can build it with exactly the parts & features you want, and none that you dont. You can also save a little money, depending on what brands you use.

I think the biggest reason people build rather than buy a complete AR is the personal satisfaction of knowing you "made" it.

Who are the common dealers in the AR kits? I know Bushmaster and I can also check out the gunbroker.com-type sites,... any other biggies out there?
