I recently bought a few parts for an AR10 build, coincidently, my first. I have a decent knowledge of firearms, but not of building and assembling.

I bought a Stag 10 complete lower and stripped upper, links below. It is important to note that these are left handed.

I'm currently ordering a barrel for this build from X-Caliber Barrels. My selection so far is a 20" barrel, 1:10 with a rifle length gas system. The one thing i'm currently stumped on is Gas Block Journal Length. The options are 1" long gas block journal and 1.92" gas block journal. I'm not sure which of these makes the most sense. There is also a selection for "Adjustable Gas Block Use Intended" which makes the gas port slightly larger, per their website.

Which GBJ is the best size and why? Any wisdom and guidance would be much appreciated.

ALSO, since I know that wisdom abounds in this forum, ANY pointers, tips, suggestions, etc are welcomed and much appreciated. Anything that you think can help me or point me in the right direction for this build. I believe that learning from mistakes is a great catalyst for growth, but i'd like to learn from others who've made mistakes and can help me avoid the potholes.

Thanks a bunch! Can't wait to build this thing!

GBJ length can be seen in the first pic when you click the barrel length. The matte heavy barrel has a 1.92" long GBJ. The thinner polished one has the 1". It is the length of barrel turned perfectly parallel to the bore. You can see this in the pics. You can get gas blocks in either length. As to the pros and cons, i cant tell you.

I'd almost certainly splurge for an adjustable gas block.

There's such a wide range of ammo for 243Win it's hard to tell what loads will be under or over gassed and if it'll be extreme enough to cause issue.

About the only case I wouldn't suggest an adjustable is for a 5.56 "fighting rifle" type build that won't be suppressed. Almost any other build, I'd suggest an adjustable gas block.

Thank you!!! Seems like they only make 1" GBJ in the pencil barrels, which isn't going to work with my build. The default is 1.92" on all barrels

That makes sense! I found Superlative Arms Adj Gas Block, and it looks pretty nice. A bit pricey, but who said this hobby was cheap?! :) Thank you!!!

For 243win in an LFAR:

• Get an AGB

• Get a +1 or +2 gas system

But to the question at hand, get the longer journal. The short journal only works with micro blocks, whereas the longer journal works with any block. Might not look right if you have an exposed block and extra length sticking out of a micro, especially with a colored barrel if the journal is left raw, as some are, but picking a short journal will mean you cannot use most gas blocks on the market.

Don’t use bleeding gas blocks.

Gotcha. I wasn't sure if the Journal had to match the AGB, but i've learned that it doesn't matter. You can have a 1" AGB and a 1.92" journal. Thanks for the info!!!!!!
