Hello all, it's me again !

Now I am looking to do some work on my Remington 700 that I was given as a gift. It is chambered in .308 and I am going to turn it into a M40a1. I have found the components and was wondering you some of you more experienced fellas could give me advice on where to find them cheaper. Prices are as follows:

Shilen Heavy Bull Barrel 24" Chrome moly match $192 OR Shilen Heavy Bull Barrel 24" chrome Stainless Steel match $274. ( I am truly not sure which is better)

Shilen Competition model trigger $139

Mcmillan M40a1 original model stock $596

I already have the scope i plan on mounting on it.

Well, to be honestly, the 30" barrel was just sort of a preference for me. USMC uses a 26" barrel. I guess going traditional would be the best option, figured if i didn't like it i could just shorten it and recrown, it is only $20 extra for the 4 inches.

That is a very interesting deal chuck, i will certainly look into it before i wrap up any final deals.

It's my personal opinion that a 30" barrel is less desirable than the M40A1's 24" barrel. The longer the bullet is in the barrel, the more time you have to muck up your shot by moving the gun, even just a tiny little bit. A 24" barrel will get you all the muzzle velocity you need, and a shorter barrel is stiffer and easier to handle.

No, I don't have numbers to back that up.

The numbers are not necessary. I am not sure where I got 26" from. And point take about the time in barrel. Most of the intel i have gathered thus far has been word of mouth from fellas off base. Any stock recommendations, if no one disagrees with the Mcmillan stock I believe ill be purchasing by friday.

Why not the McMillan A5? I believe that is what is on the M40A3. The M40A3 is a few numbers higher than the M40A1, so you know it's better :neener:

JK, but I would like to know what scope you plan on using?

On the website they are advertising a .75 group. 1 1/2 with human error perhaps.

Thats for the average age shooter who's father was born in the 50's or 60's, I am old enough to have dated his grandmother. I am one of the older fellows born in the 30's that still shoots.
