NJ Legal Bushmaster XM-15 E2S, 16.5" barrel, fixed Ace Skelton Stock, Hogue grip, JP trigger, fluted barrel, target crown, YHM flip up B.U.I.S. with a ghost ring in the rear sight.

Five rounds at 100 yards from a block rest with Remington green/white box FMJ cartridges fit in a rectangle of about 4.5" x 3.5"

It depends. I wouldn't say you did badly. Yes, there is a lot of room for improvement, though. As long as your group is centered where you were aiming, don't worry about it too much.
 
It helps to have the rear sight as far to the rear as possible. It looks like you have another notch or two you could go back.
 
Something you may want to try is to mount a mid power scope to eliminate aiming error as much as possible, then shoot a variety of ammo to determine which is most accurate in you rifle. Afterward go back to the irons but put the rear sight as far back as you can as henschman suggested.
 
Well bushmaster it is still minute of human. Problem with ghost rings is that most people do not remember what their sight picture looked like in relation to their sight alignment. Once you can repeat both steps consistently you will have smaller groups. Also the right ammo your rifle like will help as well. Thanks for the report.
