hi.

my friend is selling a mosin nagant, so i started looking into it and found that the bullet dia is not .308, but .311. is this true? is it possible to mresize the cases to .308? i was thinking about a kreiger barrel.
thanks

i was thinking about a kreiger barrel.
Putting a $300 + labor Kreiger barrel on a $70 Mossy strikes me as an odd thing to do.

Might as well just get a .311" Kreiger barrel to start with, so you can still shoot old mil-sup ammo in it!

Nagant is .311 (or so)
After I size a 7.62x54 brass, including the neck a .308 bullet will almost fall into it.

I've got a 32 Tula that .309 and a 44 (43) M44 that's .312 . . . .I've seen .314 on other guys rifles. FWIW.

Regards,
Dave

I sold mine awhile ago, but the barrel was .311". It was one of those 'sniper' rifles with a PU scope on it. I used .303 (British) Sierra Match Kings 174 grain bullets to handload for it. Right diameter and right weight. It shot very well if I took my time. As someone said, when the Finns re-barrelled them they used .308" as the barrel diameter.

i am planning to make a match rifle over time(that is why i want a .308 barrel, for the better bullet choices), plus i want the gunsmithing experiance.
i am planning on a hunting style stock and a polished and deburreed trigger(i heard that they arent that good on these guns)

some of you said to "slug the barrel". what is "slugging"?
thanks

The Mossy action has many short-comings when it comes to building a custom barreled match rifle on one.

*The trigger is the worlds worst, and can't be helped much.
*The safety is almost as bad as the trigger, and seems almost an after-thought.
*The split-bridge receiver makes mounting a scope or target peep sight on top impossible.
*The multi-part bolt makes them unkind to expensive brass & reloading.

Not trying to throw cold water on your project, but there are many many more suitable actions to start throwing money at on a custom match rifle project.

i only picked the mosin nagant cause it was cheap to buy, a lot cheaper than my custom 7mm wsm remingtom 700. ($3,500) Thanks for the info
