I'm looking at getting a decent milsurp bolt action rifle & building it up. In talking with my boss, he has a .30-06 that he's used to shatter bowling balls, whereas his brother's .223 & 7.62X39 rifles' ammo just "pinged" off the ball.
My question is, I see .308 (7.62X51), .30-06 and 7.62X54 ammo. If I'm not mistaken, the former & latter are available calibers in milsurp rifles, where as, if I'm not mistaken, the .30-06 is primarily available in hunting rifles. Would the .308 & 7.62X54 have the same penetration & brute knock-down power as the .30-06, or are all three pretty much the same?
Thanks in advance for the education...I just want a longer range rifle than the jungle guns I have now!
