I'm looking at getting a decent milsurp bolt action rifle & building it up. In talking with my boss, he has a .30-06 that he's used to shatter bowling balls, whereas his brother's .223 & 7.62X39 rifles' ammo just "pinged" off the ball.

My question is, I see .308 (7.62X51), .30-06 and 7.62X54 ammo. If I'm not mistaken, the former & latter are available calibers in milsurp rifles, where as, if I'm not mistaken, the .30-06 is primarily available in hunting rifles. Would the .308 & 7.62X54 have the same penetration & brute knock-down power as the .30-06, or are all three pretty much the same?

Thanks in advance for the education...I just want a longer range rifle than the jungle guns I have now!

There are some surplus bolt guns in .30-06, notably the Springfield 1903, Columbian, Belgian and Peruvian Mausers (Also the Danish M47 Madsen, although those are pretty rare). Anyway, all three rounds are pretty darn close to each other power-wise.

Well, I'm not very sure I'd chose my cartridge based on it's effect on bowling balls unless you shoot a lot of bowling balls. ;) Also, I'm not too sure how safe of an activity that is. :scrutiny:

The 30-06 probably does have the most energy. The 7.62x54R probably edges out the 7.62x51 but all three probably generally are capable of performing the same tasks assuming similar quality ammo and similar barrel lengths.

One thing to keep in mind is the 7.62x54R is going to be the cheapest to shoot by a long shot unless you have a hookup with someone for .308. Or you reload.

I can recommend the Indian Ishapore 2A and 2A1 rifles similar to the Enfield but chambered in 7.62x51 NATO. S&K makes a scope mount if you want to go that route and scout-style mounts are available as well. One thing to keep in mind if you want to scope a Mosin is that you will need a different specific bolt which generally run in the $50 price range.

What exactly are you wanting this rifle to do? Or more of just a general 'longer range' possible SHTF rifle that may be used for occasional hunting?

Generally....

...exactly what you mentioned, cratz2- a longer range SHTF AND hunting rifle. Almost all my weapons are "dual use"!

I have been considering the Mosin Nagant, among other things;I am on a family budget & can't readily afford the $700+ guns some other folks can buy, so I have to go more budget-minded.

Thanks for the info!:)

Don't forget the rest of the 8mm family like the 8mm Mauser which IIRC is 8x57 JS. Should protect you from most rampant bowling balls and is real cheap to shhot.
