One of the very last things that I have yet to order is a bullet puller. As always I was doing research on the different bullet pullers and while the normal hammer style bullet puller seems to work alright.... it seems very neanderthal and oftentimes takes many attempts.
It seems as if the RCBS Bullet Puller with collet is the way to go. What do you guys think. I have the Redding Big Boss II single press and it seems as if the RCBS bullet pullet with collet will work nicely with my Redding Big Boss II. What do you guys think? Any disadvantages of the RCBS bullet puller with collet?

Thanks in advance!!!

I did away with my "hammer" and finally ordered the RCBS bullet puller and the necessary collets. Have been pleased with the results.

Just ordered the RCBS bullet puller with the needed collets!!! Thanks guys for your input... makes my decisions so much easier!!!

"...starting with ANY cast lead bullet..." You're doing something wrong. Likely what you're whacking it on and/or too much unnecessary crimp. Wood, carpet or even concrete are too soft. A nice igneous rock works every time.

I use a 4x4 post with my kinetic puller and rarely have problems when I need to "erase " my mistakes.
You may run into problems trying to pull wad cutter type bullets that are seated flush with a collet type puller.

YES TO THE COLLET but there are some bullets it will NOT pull starting with ANY cast lead bullet.
I hear this a lot and don't understand the problem. Even my heavily crimped .357 and .44 cast bullets come out after a few whacks. I have never had any bullet not come out be it cast or otherwise. I think people see the plastic head and are overly cautious about smacking it hard enough. I use a piece of carpet over a concrete floor and just have at it until the bullet comes out. You can smack those things pretty hard without breaking them.

What they are saying is a collet puller will pull rifle bullets.

But a collet puller will not pull lead handgun bullets or most handgun bullets, as there is not enough bullet sticking out of the case for the collet to get hold of.

You really need both a collet for rifle, and a impact for everything else it wont work on.

But, if you can only have one or the other?
An impact hammer is the one to have.
It works for everything.

Collet pullers don't.

Bullet puller

How to pull rifle bullets without a puller:

1. Remove die from press.

2. Place loaded round on shellholder.

3. Raise ram until bullet protrudes above die hole in press.

4. Grab bullet with a set of side cutting pliers ( the kind that only cut and do not grip). With the pliers 90 degrees to the ram.

5. Lower ram.

Leaves a couple of little tick marks on the bullets that don't have a cannelure.
You will not notice it.

For pistol bullets or short rifle cartridges use the hammer type or maybe set a short piece of pipe over the ram for jacketed pistol bullets or short rifle cases and then use the sidecuts. One would hope a bullet puller wouldn't be needed often. The kinetic puller does come in handy if we wish to annoy a "member of the staff" that sometimes offers unsolicited and unwanted advice. OYE

I will not be reloading my 40 or 45 or 9mm handgun rounds. As far as handgun rounds the only round I will be reloading is my 500 S&W. Would it be incorrect for me to assume since the bullet on the 500 S&W is much larger and protrudes more that the collet puller will be able to grab it no problem as opposed to say a 40 cal?

I have the Hornaday Cam Loc bullet puller as well and really like it. You do need the specific collet for the bullet you are trying to pull. I do not know if Hornaday or RCBS for that matter make one in .500 dia. Might have to use the pliers trick to get them out if I have any mistakes with mine. The puller works great with jacketed rifle bullets, not so much with lead handgun bullets as mentioned above for me.

This has been asked before.

I use a kinetic puller for lead bullets, and an RCBS for jacketed. Why the RCBS unit? Because I got two in a trade--and it works.

They make a .50 cal collet and I ordered it. I am going to get a hammer puller for a back up in case the collet style puller does not do the trick for a certain cartridge.

I still don't own a bullet puller. The occasional screw up is one or two rounds, and I just pull them with pliers. I have a .357 round sitting on the shelf above my bench where I managed to insert a primer backwards and did not catch it until after I loaded it. I need to pull that one and salvage the brass and primer.

I have both. If the collet will work for a given caliber/projectile, it is the preferred way to go. Some bullets just don't work with the collet (like most 40 bullets, and wad cutters) so you have to use a inertia puller for those.

For the Frankford inertia hammer, I just use the corresponding shell holder instead of the included collets - quicker IMHO.

I use the RCBS collett puller

I have not used it that many times and never with a lead bullet but it has worked flawlessly for me. Maybe I have just been lucky.

I have never used the inertia puller. It probably makes sense to have both.

I have used both collet and inertia hammer pullers. I prefer the inertia pullers for simplicity. Plus it takes out some of the frustration of "I made a mistake! Obscenity Obscenity" of hitting a hammer against something hard.

The lead tipped Game kings didn't like the hammer. Now with the collet puller I can save the bullets also.

Trick on kinetic (hammer type) pullers... put a small wad of paper towel in bottom of puller so lead bullets don't get mangled by the internal ridges of the puller housing...

I have an inertia puller and a young son who loves to hammer so that works out well! I recently got 200 44mag reloads in with a trade and he is almost through them all so I can reuse the bullets and primed brass.

I have both the RCBS is definitely better on rifle jacketed bullets lots faster. Hammer type ok for a couple rounds takes to long for several.
