I recently bought a RCBS collet bullet puller. I really don't like the inertia puller and the first time I used the collet puller I really like it. I was pulling 110gr Hornady VMax from 270 Win, no issues quick and slick! Now I am trying to pull 168 Gr TSX from 30-06, having a tough time getting the collet to grab. Am I doing something wrong or is there a trick with the Barnes bullets?

Thanks!

I'm rather new to the RCBS puller myself, but I have found that some of the harder bullet types, such as a solid copper, require a bit more tension on the handle to get a good hold. It's probably just slipping off the bullet I bet.

And when you use it on jacketed bullets that are crimped, like .357 and such, it will deform the bullet. I like mine, but I still have a use for my kinetic puller.

Make sure you measure bullets that you've pulled with that tool before re-using them. I say this because it can significantly deform them, especially when your new to that tool, like me is.

Did you swap out the .270 collet for a .30 caliber collet? That puller uses a different collet for each caliber.

Yup, I swapped out the collet, I think that was the first thing I checked.
Maybe it just is the shape or hardness of these bullets. I will have to give it a shot again tonight and see if I have better luck.

Looking at the shape of the bullets, it looks like the .270 Vmax seats with the ogive (tangent) out of the case, which allows the puller to grip on the full diameter of the bullet. The .308 TSX appears to seat at or near the ogive, not allowing a good grip on the bullet.

I have been pulling some .311 with the same problem. One thing that helped was to run the round through the seater die, setting so no crimp is applied and the bullet is pushed in slightly. This breaks the grip of the case and usually makes pulling easier. The seater is used for consistency.

Jessey Haywood is also correct. I tried seating them a couple thous, and it does help them come out a little easier.

I really like an inertia puller/hammer for larger weight bullets, say anything over 130grs, especially if there is no crimp.
